On May 30, this past Saturday, we had such a moving SAY MY NAME 5k & 1 mile walk in Lewes, Delaware along the Breakwater Cape Henlopen State Park Trail. This event raised awareness, advocated for the need of DIPG research, remembered the children lost this past year that we’ve had the honor of getting to know. Participants offered up thoughts and prayers to those still battling pediatric cancer. If you participated in our event or even if you’ve walked the trail afterwards we are sure you’ve seen the beautifully painted stones placed there for all to see with children’s names on them. These are children who are currently battling DIPG. The windchimes (now removed since our event ended) along the trail during our event represented ones who’ve left their earthly bodies this past year.

We encourage you to NOT take these stones unless you are going to place them elsewhere along the beautiful nature trail that people will walk by. It’s important for these children to be thought about … to have their names said. These children need all of the prayers we can offer up to discover the research break through they so desperately need and to help them down this difficult road.

One of these rocks along the trail is for sweet little Hadley, better known as Haddie. It is green with little hearts on it. As you pass her painted rock we ask you to send thoughts to her family. Maybe even have a moment of silence. Her family is experiencing an unimaginable loss.

Such a memorable event today!! We added a second 5k & 1 miler to our race series. We will now have one the first Saturday after Memorial Day in Lewes AND one Thanksgiving in Rehoboth Beach…YEARLY!!

Today was our first annual SAY MY NAME! We had so many positive comments from participants! Our trail went into the Cape Henlopen State Park where runners and walkers were greeted with the sound of 21 wind chimes along the route. Each wind chime represents a child diagnosed with DIPG, a terminal pediatric brain tumor, that Rylie’s Smile has had the honor to work with and has passed on. Some participants told us that this made them think about what these children endured and pushed them to run harder.

Also along the way were 50 hand painted stones…these also included children’s names who are still facing a tough road ahead. ALL of these families and children need our thoughts and prayers. You may see one of these stones if you walk the Breakwater trail in the coming weeks. Please say their name as you come across them.

Afterwards we all listened to Catch The Drift and had a bite to eat while we discussed how moving the trail was for this event. Thank you to The American Legion Post 17, NKS, Races2Run, Catch The Drift and DPI for helping to make today happen. Mark your calendars for next years Say My Name on June 5th!

Learn more about DIPG and how devastating this childhood brain cancer is. Due to the tremendous lack of funding a majority of DIPG and DMG research is privately funded. Truly it’s these families who fund the research to battle their own child’s killer. When you want to do something to make a difference please think about this. Pediatric cancer is only rare until it happens to someone you love.

Meet Asha, 15 years old. One of the many extraordinary children that Rylie's Smile Foundation has been honored to assist. Here is what her mom has to say about her daughters devastating diagnosis and how thankful she is for continued support.

"You would’ve never known that Asha had anything wrong with her up until two years ago when she began to lose balance and her walking became wobbly. Up until that point she was so active with skateboarding, gymnastics, ice skating, bike riding and just always on the go. I had to push her doctors to do more testing when I saw that she was physically imbalanced. After months of bouncing from Dr to Dr, we finally got an MRI and by that time her right arm was weaker and her right eye was starting to turn. Finding out that she had a tumor that’s an aggressive terminal cancer (DIPG) was utterly devastating to us all. Asha’s diagnosis literally upended our lives. She has shown us the true meaning of resilience and grit and hope. As her name means hope, she exudes it. None of us will give up hope and we will do everything we can to fight and to make Asha’s days the happiest we can.
We found Rylies Smile through the DIPG network and discovered how helpful they are for families such as ours. Within a week of working with Rylie’s Smile Foundation Asha’s baseline anxieties were lifted. The supplements that Rylie’s Smile helped us gain access to helped to calm her nerves and improve sleep regulation. After months of working with the foundation I am seeing an improvement in general. I know that the combination of radiation, her medicine (onc201), her supplements is helping her curb the growth of the tumor and I have hope this will continue. The foundation has been so generous to us with providing access to safe natural supplements approved by Asha’s medical team without charge. I would not be able to afford these on my own and insurance does not pay for them. We are so so grateful!!!!
Asha has shown all of us every day what it’s like to live in the moment. She is defying the odds now at this point 2 years later. She’s still able to go to school most days and she is given every opportunity that I can possibly find to help her fight this cancer. Rylie’s Smile has definitely helped her in this. In combination with her medication and a good diet we have been successful in fighting this and keeping the tumor at bay. Asha has never given up hope and she shows us the true meaning of resilience. We are so grateful for Rylie’s Smile in their generosity and I know for sure that this has been helping Asha as every day she maintains the strength. Thank you Rylie’s Smile Foundation and their supporters for being a part of my daughter‘s health and wellness!! We hope that this is continued for other children to help them fight cancer!!"
