DE Center for the Inland Bays OUR MISSION: To preserve, protect, and restore Delaware’s Inland Bays and their watershed.

If you live or vacation in south coastal Delaware…the Inland Bays are the Bays in Your Backyard. Three shallow bays- Rehoboth Bay, Indian River Bay and Little Assawoman Bay– lie just behind a narrow spit of land in sight and sound of the Atlantic Ocean. The bays serve as the backbone of Delaware’s coastal resort area stretching from Cape Henlopen to the north at the mouth of the Delaware Bay to th

e Town of Fenwick Island at the Maryland state line to the south. The watershed area also extends west to the headwater streams of Indian River and other tributaries, and the farm fields, millponds and marshes of Sussex County, Delaware.

As summer winds down, we’re looking back on a busy and rewarding month across the Inland Bays watershed. From hands-on education and community resources to restoration, internships, and special events, here are a few August highlights:

Resilient Earth, Resilient Communities arrived at James Farm Ecological Preserve! This traveling exhibit from NSF NCAR is free and open to the public through October 24. We’re excited to share this opportunity with our community and explore what it means to build a more resilient Inland Bays watershed.

Community Resilience Resources is now live! This new webpage provides residents, communities, and local leaders with information and practical resources for building a more resilient Southern Delaware.

We said farewell to two of our summer interns, Daniel and Ella! We’re grateful for all their hard work, curiosity, and contributions to the Center this summer and wish them the best in their next adventures.

Staff got creative with local artist John Donato! The team worked together to create two paintings that will be featured in the Decked Out fundraiser auction. John will even add the finishing touches live at the event!

Decked Out is coming up September 24! Join us at Big Chill Beach Club from 6:30–9:30 p.m. for an evening of great food, drinks, beautiful views, live music by Sam Nobles, a sweet treat from Brûlé, and original artwork by John Donato — all in support of the Inland Bays.

The air around us is something we all share—and keeping it healthy is an important part of building healthy, resilient communities.

Air quality can be affected by tiny particles of dust and debris, known as particulates, as well as other airborne contaminants like microplastics, nitrogen, sulfur, and carbon dioxide. These can affect our health and impact wildlife, water, soil, and other parts of our watershed.

The good news? Understanding these connections helps us better prepare, protect our communities, and care for the watershed we all call home. 🌱

The 39th Annual Delaware Coastal Cleanup is happening Saturday, September 19, from 9 a.m.–noon! Volunteers across Delaware will spend the morning picking up litter and helping keep our beaches, waterways, and public spaces clean. 💙

Want to join us? Some of our Center staff will be at the North Inlet cleanup location, and we’d love to see you there! Or, choose a cleanup site closer to you and pitch in wherever you are. 🌱

🔔 REMINDER 🔔 Citizens Advisory Committee Meeting is this week!

Join the Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) of the Delaware Center for the Inland Bays for the third Citizens Café of 2026, part of a year-long conversation exploring the theme Resilience in the Inland Bays Watershed: Adapting, Protecting, and Thriving.

Throughout the year, Citizens Café gatherings explore resilience at different scales—from individual actions to community collaboration and public policy—recognizing that lasting progress depends on the combined efforts of residents, organizations, and decision-makers.

This August session builds on previous conversations by focusing on Delaware’s resilience efforts through policy development, statewide planning, and implementation. Featured speakers include Senator Stephanie Hansen, 10th District and Susan Love, Administrator of Climate & Sustainability Programs with DNREC.

Come be part of the conversation. Citizens Café offers a welcoming space to learn, ask questions, and connect with others who care about the future of the Inland Bays and the communities that depend on them.
