Please continue to pray for the people of Haiti. There are so many victims of the pure evil that is going on. People are running for their lives with nowhere to go. Tens of thousands of people having to move each day just trying to stay one step ahead of the gangs, but no place in the capital is safe. Most have lost almost everything. There are extra people staying at my house, but no idea where to go next if the gangs continue pushing closer.

Haiti - FLASH: "If the situation continues, there will not be much left of Haiti to save" says William O'Neill
On the sidelines of the 58th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, William O'Neill, the UN designated independent expert on human rights in Haiti, in an interview, described the scale of the violence, which is largely fueled by armed gangs that control large parts of the capital, Port-au-Prince. O'Neill also noted that gang influence is spreading to other regions, further complicating the situation.
"Social protection is limited, the state is almost non-existent, especially in the most marginalized areas. The population lacks everything from water to food [...] Schools and hospitals have closed, mainly in the capital, and gangs have filled the void. deploring massive impunity for crimes, including serious human rights violations and abuses, in part due to corruption and poor governance.
"It is in the poor neighbourhoods of Port-au-Prince that gangs are found, and one of the reasons is that for many young people, there is no other choice. Nearly half of gang members are teenagers or younger. We interviewed a few of them during our visit in September 2024, and they told us "We had no other choice." There are no jobs. Their families are suffering from hunger. The gangs provide them with a hot meal a day, some money and a gun. For many, this is their best option. "
About two million children in Port-au-Prince have been exposed to extreme violence: shootings, kidnappings, murders of their family members. Many had to hide under their desks to avoid being shot. The psychological and emotional cost is immeasurable. Those who have committed horrific abuse will need help to cope with mental trauma or the consequences of it throughout their lives. They will need psychosocial support and access to reintegration and rehabilitation, just like child soldiers demobilized in other parts of the world.
"The Haitian people are suffering enormously and the urgency of resolving this crisis is growing day by day. If the situation continues, there may not be much left of Haiti to save," O'Neill said.
