Biohub Combining frontier AI & frontier biology to help scientists cure or prevent disease

05/27/2026

Today, we’re releasing a world model of protein biology: a scientific engine for prediction, design, and discovery that consists of ESMFold2, ESMC, and ESM Atlas. Together, they’re helping to open up a new way for researchers to design proteins and speed up scientific discovery.

Our mission is to cure or prevent disease. To do that, we need to accelerate science. That’s why we’re releasing all three openly. More at our link in bio.

AI + single-cell biology just opened a new door for treating diffuse midline glioma, one of the rarest childhood brain tumors.

Our team used AI to identify 3 existing drugs that work together to target all 7 of the cancer’s distinct cell states—confirmed at ~90% accuracy in the lab. A powerful example of how AI, biology and medicine can come together to unlock new treatment strategies, even for the rarest diseases.

This is what happens when our frontier AI and frontier biology combine: faster discovery, smarter science, and real results for patients.

7.5 million people in the U.S. live with psoriasis. Many still struggle — despite existing treatments.

Our team combined AI analysis with CRISPR experiments to identify overlooked biological pathways, then tested an existing asthma drug as a potential treatment.

And it worked.

What if we could keep a timeline of gene activity inside cells?

Many important biological processes, such as learning in brain cells or changes in cancer cells, depend on how gene activity evolves over time, not just at a single moment. Most tools that capture that information either require constant live imaging, which is hard to maintain, or they destroy the cell and lose important information.

This colorful image shows CytoTape inside a cell. Cytotape keeps a physical record of gene activity over time and works by building a long, flexible protein where different parts of the strand can mark when and how strongly certain genes were active.

This foundational work moves us closer toward better understanding learning, memory, and aging 👏 Congrats to the team, including Biohub grantees Changyang Linghu and Denise Cai.

Imaging biology isn't just about magnification; it's about clarity. WaveOrder is a new tool that allows us to visualize what’s really happening inside cells and tissues. Here you can see cells captured by three different microscopy techniques (orientation, brightfield and fluorescence); the tiny green specks in the last set are immune cells, known as macrophages, which are much sharper and easier to see with WaveOrder.

You’re looking at a new way to see entire organs at nanoscale resolution without a single cut to precious organ samples.

Led in part by Gokul Upadhyayula, the VIPS method uses light instead of physical blades to remove tissue, layer by layer, while keeping every structure intact for stunning 3D reconstructions.

With this level of clarity, researchers can watch how disease rewires cells and their connections, insights that can ultimately point us toward better prevention, treatments, and cures.

At Biohub, bringing together collaborators is no joke—it’s what makes us powerful 💪

Andrea Califano explains how scientists, engineers, and AI experts at Biohub are working together to reprogram immune cells so they will be able to spot the earliest signs of diseases like cancer, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s, and deliver treatment when and where it’s needed.

Our mission: help scientists cure or prevent all diseases. With AI, that goal is closer than ever — and we are pushing the frontiers of biology and AI to get there.
