Approximately 400 million people live with a rare disease and fewer than 5% have an approved therapy. The Rare As One Network was founded on the belief that patient communities could change that—and they are.

Since 2019, Biohub has supported 94 patient-led organizations that have engaged 320,000+ patients and 26,000+ researchers to accelerate progress toward treatments and cures. More than half have launched clinical trials.

That’s why we’re excited to announce that we’ll be opening applications for the fourth cycle of the Rare As One Network this fall.

With rapid advances in genomics and AI, there is an unprecedented opportunity to expedite the journey from basic discovery to patient benefit. At Biohub, we bring AI, biology, and patient communities together to deepen understanding of disease biology so that curing or preventing all disease can become a reality sooner than previously thought possible.

People didn’t think it would be possible to build the laser phase plate. It required bouncing a laser 10,000x between perfectly polished mirrors – so perfect that only one team in the world can polish them to the atomic-level smoothness required.

The idea was first conceived over 15 years ago. Today, it’s a reality. It will capture details in human cells never seen before, illuminating the molecular underpinnings of disease.

People thought this would be impossible to build. With only 2 in the entire world, the laser phase plate enhances cryo-electron microscopy so scientists can see details in human cells never seen before.

These details can’t be seen by current tools, including structures that may hold the key to understanding how diseases start and how to stop them.

The concept was originally proposed by physicists Holger Müller and Robert Glaeser more than 15 years ago. Today, it’s a reality.

This is the start of a whole new era of biological imaging.

Introducing the laser phase plate! A tiny device with a big impact, the laser phase plate makes it possible to see the faint details inside cells that current tools can’t reach. These details may hold the key to understanding how diseases start and how to stop them.

The concept was originally proposed by physicists Holger Müller and Robert Glaeser more than 15 years ago. People thought it would be impossible to build. In part because the mirrors require such perfect polishing, there’s only one team in the world that can do it.

But today it is a reality, ushering in a new era for high resolution imaging.

AI + single-cell biology just opened a new door for treating diffuse midline glioma, one of the rarest childhood brain tumors.

Our team used AI to identify 3 existing drugs that work together to target all 7 of the cancer’s distinct cell states—confirmed at ~90% accuracy in the lab. A powerful example of how AI, biology and medicine can come together to unlock new treatment strategies, even for the rarest diseases.
