CRONA Nurses

CRONA Nurses Committee for Recognition of Nursing Achievement: representing Registered Nurses at Stanford Health Packard Children’s Hospital.

Our History:

The Committee for Recognition of Nursing Achievement (CRONA) started as a committee called the Professional Performance Committee in 1964. It was comprised of nurses from both management and staff, and formed to address issues with the Hospital. In 1966, the American Nurses Association recommended a minimum salary for registered nurses which was more than the entry salary at Palo Alt

o-Stanford Hospital. That same year the Professional Performance Committee evolved into the Committee for Remuneration of Nursing Achievement (CRONA) to encompass the professional component of nursing as well as salary issues. Nurses from both management and staff came together to set up a structure within which they could address issues with the Hospital. The re-titled Committee consisted of 8 members and 8 alternates elected by the general body of Nurses and representing the different nursing areas. The general body of Nurses were members including Assistant Head Nurses and Head Nurses. In 1974, the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) was amended to include coverage and protection of employees of non-profit hospitals. Committee for Recognition of Nursing Achievement (CRONA) was voted in as the collective bargaining agent for the Nurses at Stanford Hospital and Clinics. In 1991, CRONA was voted in as the collective bargaining agent for the Nurses at Lucile S. Today, CRONA continues to advocate for Nurses, and ultimately patient care, at Stanford Health Care and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital (Stanford Children’s Health).

🖤This Black History Month, CRONA honors Augustus A. White III, a pioneering surgeon, educator, and advocate who helped break barriers in academic medicine.🖤

🥼In 1961, Dr. White became the first African American medical student at Stanford University School of Medicine, entering a space where Black physicians were vastly underrepresented. His achievement marked an important step forward in expanding access and representation in academic medicine.🥼

🦴Dr. White went on to become a nationally respected orthopedic surgeon, professor, and leader in health equity. Throughout his career, he has championed diversity in medicine, culturally competent care, and the importance of addressing disparities that impact patient outcomes.🦴

💪🏾His work reminds us that representation in healthcare matters in classrooms, in leadership, and at the bedside. Progress in medicine happens when doors open wider for those who follow.💪🏾

We honor the pioneers who continue to shape a more equitable future in healthcare.

🖤This Black History Month, CRONA honors Hazel W. Johnson-Brown, a trailblazing nurse and leader who shattered barriers in both healthcare and military service.🖤

🪖In 1979, Hazel W. Johnson-Brown became the first Black woman general in the U.S. Army, rising to the rank of Brigadier General and later serving as Chief of the Army Nurse Corps. At a time when leadership roles in both nursing and the military were overwhelmingly inaccessible to Black women, she led with excellence, discipline, and vision.🪖

🥼Throughout her career, she championed professional advancement, education, and equity for nurses, while modernizing military nursing and expanding opportunities for women and nurses of color in leadership. She proved that nurses belong not only at the bedside, but at the highest levels of decision-making.🥼

🖤Her legacy reminds us that nursing leadership is powerful, impactful, and essential — in healthcare systems, institutions, and beyond.🖤

🖤Next in our Black History Month Healthcare Pioneers, CRONA honors Charles R. Drew, a physician, researcher, and pioneer whose work still saves lives every single day.🖤

🩸Dr. Drew revolutionized blood transfusion practices and donation, developing methods to safely collect, store, and transport blood plasma laying the foundation for modern blood banks. He also helped create the first large-scale mobile blood donation units a.k.a. “bloodmobiles,” bringing lifesaving care directly into communities and expanding access to donors nationwide.🩸

🪖During World War II, his systems helped save thousands of lives. Yet even as a leader in medicine, he spoke out against the racist and unscientific practice of segregating blood by race, advocating for equity, ethics, and evidence-based care.🪖

💪🏾🏥Today, his legacy lives on through institutions like Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, which continues advancing health equity and training the next generation of healthcare professionals.💪🏾🏥

🚑Because of Dr. Drew, emergency rooms, trauma care, and transfusions look the way they do today. Innovation and advocacy have always gone hand in hand.🚑
