A question to the Alumni Association members out there-what would you like to see more of from the Alumni Association? I'm not talking about our page; I'm talking about real-world stuff.

To our non-members out there, what could we do that would entice you to join?

Wednesday night, the Sequoia Union High School District Board recognized Ken Rolandelli, retiring President of the Sequoia High School Alumni Association, for his 24 years of outstanding leadership.

Think about everything that has changed during that time. But throughout those years, there has been one remarkable constant for this organization: Ken.

Ken has chaired the Cherokee Grants Committee. He has led our Alumni Picnic Committee for 19 years. He has overseen the Purple Patriot Award process. He helped guide the Association through the difficult mascot issue with diligence and grace. And he took the lead on the recent Tea Garden refurbishment, and much more, too numerous to mention here.

Through all of it, he has maintained excellent relationships with the Board, the school, and the larger Sequoia community, and although he is retired as President, he will still chair many important committees and be an essential source for knowledge.

Perhaps Ken's greatest accomplishment isn't any single project or event. It's the organization we have today. Thank you Ken!

Sunday History Spotlight: Olympic Champion Bruce Harlan

One of the remarkable figures in Sequoia High School’s athletic history was Bruce Harlan, an Olympic champion who brought world-class experience to the Sequoia pool.

Harlan won gold in the 3-meter springboard and silver in the 10-meter platform at the 1948 Olympic Games in London. During his collegiate career at Ohio State, he accumulated numerous NCAA, Big Ten and national AAU diving championships before coming west and doing graduate work at Stanford.

In the early 1950s, Harlan became part of Sequoia’s Physical Education Department and helped coach its aquatic program. The yearbook photos pictured here show him with Sequoia’s boys’ gym department and identify him as Coach Bruce Harlan with the water polo team. Sequoia alumni later remembered Harlan as one of an unusually accomplished group of instructors who made the school’s physical-education program nationally noteworthy. He and fellow Sequoia coach Buck Devine even helped produce the community’s popular “Aqua Follies.”

After his years at Sequoia, Harlan became diving coach at the University of Michigan from 1954–1959. His life was tragically cut short at only 33 when he died following a fall while dismantling a diving tower after an exhibition in Connecticut.

His impact on the sport endured: in 1973, Bruce Harlan was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame. Swimming Hall of Fame

It is pretty extraordinary to think that an Olympic gold medalist and future Hall of Famer once coached right here at Sequoia. These old yearbook pages preserve a wonderful piece of Sequoia history. 💜🏊‍♂️

Once a Cherokee, always a Cherokee.
