Why I Donate: The Ripple Effect of One Friendship 👥

For Jennifer, becoming a mentor to Angela was about more than volunteering her time. At 23 and in college, Jennifer was matched with 9-year-old Angela through our 1-to-1 Mentoring Program.

What began as a mentorship match blossomed into a meaningful connection through weekly visits, shared adventures, and the simple moments that helped them build trust.

More than a decade later, Jennifer had the chance to catch up with Angela and hear about her life since their time together. What stayed with Jennifer most was hearing what their friendship had meant to Angela. Angela shared that after their mentorship ended, she participated in other programs, but when they talked about those experiences, she told Jennifer:

“It wasn’t how it was with you. I never felt that again in any other program.” — Angela

Hearing those words brought Jennifer’s experience full circle. She knew she still wanted to make a difference, so she asked herself, “What can I do?”

Her answer was to give back.

Today, Jennifer is a recurring donor, helping make it possible for more young people to experience friendships like theirs.

Our 2026 Mentorship & Leadership Training was a success! 🎉

Our staff, group mentors, MSW interns, and WHY Fellows came together for a day of learning, connection, and preparation for the new school year and our school- and site-based group mentoring programs.

We covered leadership skills, classroom management, communication styles, relationship building, creating safe spaces, and more. Our WHY Fellows also prepared for their workplace development roles throughout the community.

A big heartfelt thank you to our Associate Director, Monica Mejia, for sharing your knowledge, creating an engaging space, and making the training so meaningful for the entire team! 🩵

We’re proud to invest in our team and ensure we’re better equipped to support and serve our youth and our greater community. Here’s to a meaningful year ahead! 🌱

Backpacks Filled with Care! 🎒💕

We brought our backpack drive full circle by distributing 90+ backpacks to youth and families across our community!

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our TIDAL partners, we provided essential supplies to students across all of our programs, including our 1-to-1 and group mentoring youth, Youth Advisory Board students, alumni mentees and more!

Seeing the smiles on their faces and hearing directly from parents about what this support means was truly unforgettable 🙏🏽.

Words from our parents:

“Receiving a backpack is more than just getting school supplies. It helps students feel confident, prepared, and excited to start the school year.”

“Me siento apoyada” — “I feel supported.”

Those three words capture the exact heart of this initiative. When our students and families feel supported, our entire community grows stronger.

💟 FFY Besties Campaign! 🎉

We’re officially launching our 2026 Besties Campaign and kicking things off by sharing the stories behind why our supporters choose to give monthly.

Meet Amaal, an FFY mentor turned recurring donor. In 2018, Amaal was matched with Oliver, and over the years, their friendship grew through everyday moments, new experiences, and plenty of time together. He supported Oliver with school, worked through assignments with him, and got to watch his confidence grow.

“After my mentorship with Oliver, I knew I still wanted to be part of the work Friends for Youth is doing. So, I became a recurring donor. It’s an easy way for me to continue supporting young people and help create the kind of mentorship I experienced for someone else.”

As we prepare for the new school year, our mighty team has been out across the Bay Area reconnecting with students, families, and school administration. From community events and school orientations to back-to-school nights, we’ve been touching base with our school partners, answering questions about our programs, and helping students stay involved with FFY for the year ahead.

It’s especially meaningful to reconnect with returning students entering a new chapter—from elementary school to middle school and middle school to high school. Transitions can be a big adjustment, so knowing they’ll have a familiar face and continued support along the way can make all the difference. These full-circle moments are truly special to us at FFY 💕

We had so much fun at yesterday’s Investing 101 workshop in partnership with Tidal Partners! 📈

From learning the basics of stocks and bonds to exploring why it’s important to start saving for retirement early, our students gained valuable financial knowledge they can carry with them for years to come.

And of course... KAHOOT! 🎉 Students eagerly put their new knowledge to the test in a friendly competition, showing off everything they learned along the way.

A huge thank you to Tidal Partners for equipping our students with valuable financial knowledge and helping build confidence for their futures. Experiences like these empower young people with the tools they need to make informed financial decisions and prepare for what’s ahead!!
