Good news! Rebuilding Alliance’s 7th medical food shipment, has arrived in Gaza and was received by our Palestinian NGO partner, Youth Vision Society, on Wednesday, December 14th. The shipment contained 357 cans of Type 2 formula (that was the only type available) Phenylfree medical food. This shipment will be delivered to 176 children with PKU and a few adults, mothers with PKU.
We must move as fast as we can collectively, because, but for small shipments, the PKU Children in Gaza have been without medical food for 7 months. This small shipment from Rebuilding Alliance, Type 2 formula only, amounts to just two cans per patient, a 10 days' supply at best, and leaves the newborn to 3 year olds without the medical food they need. For anyone with Phenylketonuria, permanent, cumulative, irreversible brain damage results each day unless they receive the medical food they need.
This shipment, and prior smaller ones, are mere stopgaps in a very serious crisis, a crisis that began when the world faced a shortage of infant formula last spring. PKU medical food production collapsed as well. To make matters worse, when the supplier's shipment finally reached port in Israel last June, the Israeli Ministry of Health held it for several months to test for contamination. Thankfully, the PA Ministry of Health received their supply in October. They recently delivered the precious cans of medical food to the PKU children in the West Bank.
RA urges the Palestinian Ministry of Health to make medical food for Gaza's PKU children a priority and deliver cans of medical food to Gaza as soon as possible. The world will come to your aid.
Rebuilding Alliance asks all donors to help as much as they can — this is an emergency and we can't do it alone.
