The mission of the McMillen Family Foundation is to provide assistance to eligible groups in Southern California which are dedicated to helping people of all ages who have been impacted, directly or indirectly, by alcohol and/or drugs and to provide community outreach and education to prevent alcohol and/or drug addiction before it starts. In 2002, a $5.3M pledge was made by Karl McMillen to open
the Thelma McMillen Center at Torrance Memorial Hospital. McMillen’s late wife, the Thelma McMillen Center houses a comprehensive outpatient program to treat chemical dependency. “My wife and I lost two sons to drugs and I had struggled with alcohol,” McMillen told a reporter. “This issue hits so close to home for me, I felt compelled to make a difference, and do something about it to help our community.”
