First and foremost, Central Oregon Volleyball Club does not, and will not ever condone racism or racist behavior. We apologize for taking time to address the social media post that has come to our attention posted by an athlete who played for us last season. We have seen the social media posts and find them unacceptable, gross, and cannot and will not condone such behavior from any athlete.
Unfortunately, sometimes people can be tone deaf to words, to actions and blind to what hate is, and the hurt it causes others. As a person who doesn’t “TikTok” we thank others for notifying our club, and we thank people for giving many a wakeup call and reminder that we as a society have work to do. Parents let this also be a message you share with your teenagers, coaches let this restore the message sometimes we forget to relay to our athletes about actions having consequences, teachers remind students….social media is a tool some use without seeing the bigger picture, the hurt it inflicts on others, the bullying, the hate, the TikTok challenges that are leading to injuries and death. Social media also is a horrible way for those to promote and engage in racism and hate without thinking of the depth and hurt it causes many. It can be a tool for people to promote hate, and we all can do better, be better, but sadly sometimes it takes something hurtful and unacceptable to be reminded of the work we need to do.
Central Oregon Volleyball Club does not and will not tolerate such actions. We hope others now create much needed conversations, and awareness. We also will continue to educate athletes, including the former athlete who made this post about the severity of words, and actions, and the consequences for their decisions. That is how we as a community can do better.
Because a photo in a post had a uniform from a previous season with our club on it, this has been brought to the forefront of our coaching staffs conversations, and how we need to do better to educate athletes, parents, and how we move forward next season in implementing awareness, consequences and a course of action for inappropriate behavior, hate and racism.
And lastly, thank you for reaching out, thank you for bringing this to our attention, thank you for moving this to the top of the conversation for not only our organizations but to others. Together we can make a difference, and tomorrow we can do better!
