Fall is skunk season, and if your dog has a close encounter, the only way to get rid of the smell is to neutralize the oily sulfurous compounds called thiols. Forget the old claims about tomato juice. Water alone won't do it either, because those smelly compounds simply reactivate with water.... even months later. Here's what to do:

Don't panic, but act quickly if you want to remove skunk smell from a dog who has been sprayed. A few quick steps can help get rid of the skunk spray.

Another amazing angel has left us this week: Ranny Green β€” dear friend and long-time champion of SPDR.

Ranny was a former columnist for the Seattle Times, a features writer for American Kennel Club and goodnewsforpets.org, former president of the Dog Writers Association of America, former member of the Westminster Kennel Club media team, writer for Seattle Kennel Club, five-time recipient of the DWAA’s columnist of the year award, and six-time winner of the DWAA feature writer of the year for newspapers over 150,000 circulation.

His huge heart, cheerful grin, and inspiring "we got this" attitude will never be forgotten by the countless lives he impacted.

Our sincere condolences to his daughters Tamara Green, Stacy Green Penner, son-in-law Stan Penner, and his entire family... and to all of us who were fortunate to know, work with, and love this amazing human.

Please join SPDR in sincere condolences to the family of Bob Lee, beloved rescue colleague and one of our original breed representatives for Border Collies. This past Sunday, Bob was on his way to the Meeker Classic Sheepdog Trials in Colorado, an annual event that he always attended. While driving through the mountains near Mountain Home, Idaho, Bob pulled his motorcycle off the road, stepped away for a little break, and fell. Bob handled Border Collies for SPDR for over 30 years and recently added Australian Shepherds and Australian Cattle Dogs to his duties. We can't begin to count how many dogs he helped find their forever homes, but we know he has been greeted by a huge pack of Border Collies at the Rainbow Bridge. Rest in peace dear Bob, our hearts are with your family. We will be forever grateful for your huge compassionate heart and devotion to SPDR and herding dogs. πŸ™ŒπŸ’”πŸ™ŒπŸŒˆπŸΎ
