I am currently in London UK sitting eating breakfast when I see a story on ABC Channel 2 about people complaining that the village is too strict on the quarry hours.
After Jake lost his too short life in the quarry, the then police chief was actively trying to close the quarry. Now as a person originally from the UK where swimming in flooded quarries is illegal and banned I would normally have supported his actions, but having been a resident of Redgranite at this point for 6 years I saw the value of the quarry.
I argued various points to the village board at the time. If the quarry closed it would needed to be fenced in at a cost, the fence would have to be maintained at a cost and more important people would sneak in and if they got into trouble then they may not get help or be too scared to.
The compromise was to set a closing time that has been in force since that time, a rule in place now over a decade and people are now complaining.
2015 was a bad year for the quarry but the increased policing and curfew as well as the structural changes to the quarry has in my opinion saved lives. Though I am no longer a Redgranite resident the village will always be a part of me thanks to the many friendships I made there when I arrived in the US.
I personally wish to thank the village board for continuing to allow people to enjoy the quarry and for the due diligence of law enforcement in their efforts to keep YOU safe. Rules are there for a reason and if you dont like them go elsewhere. As a closing thought I wonder what the reaction of the people complaining about the rules if the rules were not in place and they lost a loved one in the quarry.
