Redford Jaycees CERT

Redford Jaycees CERT The Redford Jaycees Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is a group of citizens that are trained and prepared to help the residents in a disaster.

Redford Jaycees CERT is a 501c3 Organization. CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) is a program that was developed to teach citizens how to be prepared for themselves, their families, and their communities in the event of ANY incident where public safety and government agencies are overwhelmed. CERT was started by FEMA and the Citizen Corp programs to help provide the training and support nece

ssary to communities to teach their residents how to help themselves until governmental assistance is readily available. The Basic CERT course is 20 hours long and includes instruction in Disaster Preparedness, Fire Safety, Disaster Medical, Urban Search and Rescue, CERT and Incident Command, Disaster Psychology, and Terrorism. After completion of Basic CERT, each individual will have the knowledge necessary to prepare themselves and their families to be self sufficient for at least 3 days after an incident in their community. All students also receive a backpack stocked with some of the necessary supplies to get them started. The Redford Jaycees (a local leadership building and networking organization) recognized the benefits that CERT training could provide to their members and the residents of Redford Township. After gaining support from the Redford Police Department and the Redford Fire Department, the Redford Jaycees contacted the Wayne County Citizens Corps and began the Redford Jaycees CERT! The Redford Jaycees believe that "service to humanity is the best work of life" and wanted to prepare their members to be ready to assist the residents of Redford Township in the case of an emergency! The Redford Jaycees CERT is open to all residents of Redford Township. It is the goal of the Redford Jaycees CERT to train all Redford citizens in Basic CERT. After completion of Basic CERT, students may apply to become a member of the Redford Jaycees CERT. The application process includes a test of materials from the Basic CERT course, a background check, and an interview. Members of the Redford Jaycees CERT may be activated to assist during an event in Redford Township, as well as the surrounding areas.

We are in the midst of severe weather awareness week in Michigan, and tomorrow is officially recognized as the day for our statewide tornado drill. This test is voluntary, and is occurring at 1 pm EDT. During this time, some agencies may sound sirens, or trigger alerts on your phone. Check your local emergency management offices for details for your county or city.

If you'd like to participate, take a couple minutes of your day to plan a weather-ready shelter and kit so that you're ready to go prior to the next REAL tornado or severe wind/hail event here in Michigan. If you don't have adequate shelter at your home, set up a plan to relocate well in advance of storms entering your county. Severe weather can, and will happen any month of the year here in our great state, so it's good to be prepared year-round.
