Old Stone Barracks on the Base. It was taken around 1867 and is the oldest known image of the historic structure. The western wall is only temporarily finished in wooden clapboards instead of stone. This was in case the Army ever decided to expand the building to accomodate more troops, it wasn't finished in stone until around 1880. The stone officer's quarters, built in 1839, was demolished by the Air Force in 1964.

A circa 1897 view of the old Custom House and "Custom House Square," this time looking south-west from the intersection of Margaret and Brinkerhoff, shows how it once stood next door to the stately Witherill Hotel. You can also clearly see that the streets here were dirt at the time. The white wagon parked along Brinkerhoff Street was a Plattsburgh staple in those days, the "White House Cafe" lunch wagon. Patrons would climb inside for a quick and convienient hot meal, the great grand-daddy of today's fast food.

Plattsburgh's Custom House and Post Office, which once stood on the corner of Brinkerhoff and Margaret Streets. Completed in 1859, the brick structure stood until at least 1911 and it's well kept grounds were known as "Custom House Square." The former Federal Building, which replaced the old Custom House in the 1920s and is now the home of the North Country Council on the Arts, stands at the exact same location. Across Brinkerhoff Street is the Presbyterian Church, built in 1867 it replaced the original church which had burned in the Great Fire of that year.

President Teddy Roosevelt on the U.S. oval at Plattsburgh Barracks, taken around 1905. T.R. loved visiting the Adirondacks and vacationed here often. As Vice-President, he had actually been hiking Mt. Marcy when his predecessor, William McKinley, took a turn for the worse after being shot in Buffalo in 1901.
