Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing - Redding, CA Program

Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing - Redding, CA Program This Page represents the Redding, California Program of Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, Inc.

The Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing Redding Program was started in 2012 with 12 initial veterans attending the first meeting. Our program has grown to currently benefit approximately 38 participants in their physical and emotional recovery and healing through fly fishing and its associated activities. The program works in partnership with the Shasta Trinity Fly Fishers (STFF), the local fly fis

hing club that provides volunteers and meeting space for the Redding program as well as with the local VA Northern California Health Care System. Our program meets with our participants on a weekly basis every Monday. We provide information on all aspects of fly fishing on a rotating basis that includes fly fishing gear and equipment, casting techniques, fly tying equipment and material, entomology, fish behavior, fishing locations, safety and fly fishing etiquette. Two meetings each month are dedicated specially to a fly casting practice session and a fly tying/knot tying session. In addition, we have separate session on a yearly basis for rod building and net building. Since our program is in the heart of Northern California fly fishing, we promote and take advantage of numerous on the water fly fishing day trips and overnight trips to local pond, lakes and rivers. Our goal is to provide an average of 2 fly fishing outings each month. To help support our fly fishing outings and to supplement funds to provide fly fishing equipment that is provided free of charge to active participants, PHWFF Redding has a yearly April fund raiser. The "Sundial Challenge" fundraiser is a two day event with a mixer on Saturday that provides an opportunity for donors and the local community to meet our participants as well as to participate in a silent and live auction. Sunday is the actual fishing contest challenge where sponsors and participants drift the Lower Sacramento River for big fish and most fish bragging rights. Along with the partnership of STFF and the support of our community and its volunteers, we anticipate growing the number of participants in our program to allow us to assist in the healing and recovery of our local disabled veterans and disabled active duty personnel.
