Lace up your hiking boots and come out to Poliak Preserve on Saturday, April 18th!

Guided by our Vice President, Kevin Tschudi, this excursion will take us on a brief stroll through the forest, leading us to a beaver dam along the Saugatuck River. Hopefully, we will witness some beaver activity, but if not, we will at least get to admire the architectural prowess of this keystone species.

Use the link in our bio to register by Thursday, April 16th at 4pm! Spots are limited.

Join us on Saturday, April 11th at Putnam Park where Redding’s Co-Historians Brent Colley and Bruce Nelson will give a talk focusing on the town’s role during the American Revolution.

Afterward, Ellery Leary, Putnam Park’s historian and president of the Friends and Neighbors of Putnam Memorial State Park, will lead us on our hike. An optional extension into the Joan Plishner Preserve, will be offered by trustee Cole Tucker-Walton.

This hike is part of a series of events put on by Redding Celebrates America 250 leading up to a concert by the Greater Bridgeport Symphony at Joel Barlow High School. The May 30th program will include compositions by Redding’s own Charles Ives; the second movement of Ives’s Three Places in New England is “Putnam’s Camp.”

The second event in our 3-part “Appreciating Our Natural Environment” series is coming up!

The Book of Trails was first published in 1982 and last printed in 2005. An inherently multidisciplinary project, it has brought together writers, naturalists, mapmakers, historians, and town officials. For trustee Cole Tucker-Walton, preparing the first print edition in 20 years has been an opportunity to revisit the collaborations that shaped our access to forests, clean water, and outdoor recreation in Redding. Join us on April 14th to hear about some of the early characters in local conservation, look at the design of influential maps and nature studies, and get inspired for your own explorations in Redding’s big outdoors!

Tuesday, April 14th, 7:00-8:00pm. Register today at https://marktwainlibrary.org/events/mapping-reddings-outdoors-the-book-of-trails-updated-in-person/
