☘️Farm Friday☘️

As we continue our journey through the hay field, let’s start close to the ground with one of the most important plants growing in our pastures… clover!

Red and white clover are commonly found in hay fields and pastures because they pack a powerful nutritional punch. Most clovers contain between 15–28% crude protein, making them an excellent feed source for both dairy and beef cows.

But clover does more than just feed our animals. Clover is a legume, which means its roots work together with bacteria in the soil to pull nitrogen from the air and return it to the ground as a natural fertilizer.

That means clover helps improve soil health, retain moisture, and prevent erosion all while being one of the tastiest and most nutritious plants for cows to enjoy!

Want to support three Redding staples—New Pond Farm, the Redding Land Trust, and the Mark Twain Library—all in one visit?

Throughout the month, the Redding Land Trust’s Open Space Photo Show is on display at the Mark Twain Library. This beautiful exhibit showcases Redding’s natural spaces through the eyes and lenses of local residents, highlighting the landscapes, wildlife, and special places that make our town unique.

We’re excited to share that our Farm Manager, Rachel, was selected as a finalist and has a photograph featured in the show! Think you can spot which one is hers? Here’s a hint: it includes one of our adorable cows.

A huge thank you to everyone at the Mark Twain Library and the Redding Land Trust for hosting such a wonderful opening reception last night. We hope you’ll stop by the library this month to enjoy the exhibit and support these three incredible community organizations!

We’re excited to share some great news from one of our favorite community partners!

Over the past few months, we’ve loved partnering with Elicit Brewing Company, and now there’s even more to celebrate! We’ve been selected as their June Nonprofit of the Month!

Throughout June, Elicit guests will have the opportunity to round up their bill, with every donation supporting New Pond Farm’s educational programs, animals, and farm operations. It’s an easy way to make a difference while enjoying a great meal and supporting an even better local business.

We’re incredibly grateful to Elicit for their continued support and commitment to our community. We can’t wait to see this partnership continue to grow and help both of our organizations thrive.

Thank you, Elicit Brewing, for helping us make a positive impact, one round up at a time!

A beautiful afternoon celebrating pollinators, plants, and community at New Pond Farm!
We had such a wonderful time at our Pollinator Garden Tour & Tea with Cathy Smith. Cathy, a passionate pollinator advocate and educator, shared her incredible knowledge of native plants, pollinator habitats, and the small actions we can all take to support bees, butterflies, birds, and the ecosystems around us.

New members and longtime friends came together to explore the amazing pollinator plants growing throughout our gardens, ask questions, learn, and simply enjoy time together surrounded by the beauty of New Pond Farm.

After our garden tour, we gathered near the Sunken Garden for a lovely tea spread, generously prepared by our wonderful Board member Maria Vanoni. It was the perfect way to end the afternoon — sharing stories, conversation, and connection in such a special place.

These are the moments that remind us what New Pond Farm is all about: inspiring curiosity, caring for the natural world, and bringing people together.

We left with new knowledge, new connections, and a deeper appreciation for the beauty all around us.

A heartfelt thank you to Cathy, Maria, and everyone who joined us for such a memorable afternoon!

This is what it’s all about, agriculture and nature working hand in hand.

Our hayfields provide nutritious feed for our cows, while those same fields and surrounding pastures create the perfect habitat for wildlife, like this turkey hen raising her babies. The farm is home to so much more than cows and sheep. If you take the time to look closely, you might spot turkeys and their chicks, deer, songbirds, hawks, raccoons, skunks, and countless other species that call New Pond Farm home.

Farming and conservation can go together beautifully. The fields, forests, and pastures support both our livestock and the wildlife that share this land. Next time you visit, slow down for a moment and take in all the life around you. You’ll see how the farm and nature depend on one another, creating a healthy ecosystem that benefits us all, people and animals alike.

Hay… what is it, exactly?

We’ve gone over all the steps it takes to make the perfect bale of hay, but what’s actually inside that bale?

It’s not just the same grass growing in your front yard. Hay is made up of carefully selected varieties of grasses and legumes, each with different nutritional benefits that help keep our cows healthy, happy, and full throughout the winter months.

Over the next few weeks, follow along as we take a closer look through our hay fields and explore the different types of grasses and plants you might find growing in them!

What an incredible day! We are honored to partner with United Way of Coastal and Western Connecticut Belimo for a day of service that made a tremendous impact across our campus.
From refreshing our Learning Center to helping prepare our gardens and grounds for a busy summer camp and fall season, these dedicated volunteers worked with enthusiasm, generosity, and a true spirit of community. Their hard work will help us continue providing meaningful environmental education experiences for thousands of children and families throughout the year.
We are deeply grateful for the time, energy, and care each volunteer shared with New Pond Farm. Thank you for investing in our mission and helping us create a welcoming and inspiring place for learning, discovery, and connection with nature.
Together, we accomplished so much—and had a lot of fun along the way!
