🎉 Celebrating Oleander’s First Anniversary

On August 21, residents gathered to recognize the first anniversary of Oleander Community Housing in Chico. Together, they shared a meal, enjoyed activities, and signed a card to mark the occasion.

NVCSS is grateful to provide on-site supportive services at Oleander and to be part of the community and connections growing there. 💙

Stable housing is more than having a roof overhead. It can give someone the foundation to begin rebuilding their life. ❤️

At Oleander Community Housing, we provide permanent, supportive housing for people who were previously unhoused. But the support does not end when someone receives their keys.

As an on-site case manager, Nathan helps residents access food, clothing, benefits, transportation, advocacy, and other resources that can help them maintain stable housing and move forward.

For one resident, having a home meant something especially meaningful: finally having a safe place where his children could come visit him.

Housing creates stability. Support helps people keep it. And together, they can open the door to reconnection, healing, and a new chapter.

The future of homebuilding is taking shape, one layer at a time! 🏠

In partnership with Emergent, NVCSS is bringing an innovative 3D-printed concrete home to Shasta Lake City. Even more exciting, it will create an opportunity for a local first-time homebuyer to put down roots and call it home.

We cannot wait to watch the walls and possibilities rise!

Hope is also built by preparing the people who will provide care tomorrow. 💙

Across NVCSS Inspiring Hope Counseling, our teams partner with universities to provide master’s-level clinical trainees with supervised, hands-on experience as they prepare for careers in behavioral health.

In Butte County, Heather Slocum, LMFT, Butte Clinical Program Manager, oversees trainees from universities across California and has helped expand training opportunities, particularly in rural communities where internship placements can be difficult to secure.

Earlier this year, California State University, Chico, School of Social Work recognized Heather as its “Task Supervisor of the Year” for her work supporting the next generation of professionals.

As a CAMFT Certified Supervisor, Heather leads a team committed to high-quality clinical supervision and preparing future providers to serve our communities for years to come. 💙

Getting support should not feel like another barrier to overcome. ❤️

Through Inspiring Hope Shasta, NVCSS is working to make services easier to access by meeting families where they are and recognizing that support cannot be one size fits all.

That can mean simplifying the intake process, providing services in the home, meeting at a school or community space, or finding another solution that works for the individual or family.

The goal is simple: remove barriers, coordinate care, and make it easier for families to get the support they need, when and where they need it.

🎉 A big graduation AND a new home. This Gridley family has a lot to celebrate!

When a family of four first connected with the First 5 Family Center at Esperanza House, they began participating in playgroups and accessing the food pantry. But those first connections soon opened the door to even more support.

After the caregiver shared concerns about their child’s speech, development and behavior, Parent Educator Dulce Carrillo Acosta helped connect the family with Far Northern Regional Center.

Since then, their child has made incredible progress in speech, development and social skills. He’s more interactive with his peers, sharing with friends and recently reached a BIG milestone: successfully graduating from Far Northern Regional Center! 🎓

And the milestones didn’t stop there.

The caregiver has built friendships with other caregivers, participated in a free Red Cross First Aid training and, most recently, the family celebrated another exciting chapter: becoming homeowners! 🏡

From finding support and building friendships to celebrating some pretty big wins, their journey is one example of the connections happening every day at Esperanza House.

Sometimes one connection can open the door to so much more. 💙

💙 Community in action in Gridley!

We’re proud to have partnered with First 5 Family Center at Esperanza House and so many incredible local organizations, volunteers, and businesses to help Gridley children head back to school feeling ready and confident. ✂️🎒

From fresh haircuts to backpacks, school supplies, clothing, and even a handmade banner created by our First 5 kids, this was truly a community effort.

From Northern California to Colorado, experience gained through disaster is helping another community begin its road to recovery. ❤️

NVCSS team members Roxy Giron and Eddie DeAnda were deployed to Colorado through the Catholic Charities USA Disaster Cadre to support Catholic Charities of Southern Colorado following the Aspen Acres Fire.

Drawing from their experience working alongside wildfire survivors here in Northern California, Roxy and Eddie are helping strengthen local disaster recovery efforts and support individuals and families as they begin the long process of rebuilding.

Every disaster is different, but the heart of this work remains the same: showing up, sharing resources and experience, and standing beside communities when they need it most.

Please keep those affected by the Aspen Acres Fire, along with first responders, volunteers, and recovery teams, in your thoughts. ❤️
