Resilient Red Wing is trying to discourage the use of salt this winter. The city of Red Wing is offering free sand to anyone to use. Sand is great to use to increase traction.
"Got sand? With all the snow and ice this winter (and more surely on the way), help keep our sidewalks safe for all to use by clearing them and using materials like sand for traction when necessary. Free sand is available 24/7 at the Public Works Building (229 Tyler Road N) and the City maintenance building in the 900 block of East Seventh Street. Just bring your own container!"

A great reminder from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency
"For slippery steps and sidewalks, salt smartly! You don't need a pile of salt on your walkways to be safe. In fact, one mug's worth of salt is enough for 10 sidewalk squares!"
Or skip the salt completely.
โ„๏ธShoveling early and often will prevent snow from turning in to ice.
Poultry/Chicken grit works great for traction and you can sweep up and use again.

For slippery steps and sidewalks, salt smartly! You don't need a pile of salt on your walkways to be safe. In fact, one mug's worth of salt is enough for 10 sidewalk squares! As we gear up for more snow days ahead, let's make this winter a little greener. Find more info at the link in the comments!
