Miles Davis started cornet at 10 and got his first trumpet at 13. In 1944, he went to the Juilliard School, where he was a so-so student, spending nights in the clubs from the Village to Harlem, drawn by “the flame of bebop,” according to his biographer John Szwed.

He was keen to meet the two architects of this brash new style: trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and especially saxophonist Charlie “Bird” Parker. Davis buttonholed Parker outside the Heatwave, a club on 145th Street, and by the end of 1945, he had dropped out of school and scored a spot in his idol’s quintet. He likely recorded more trumpet with Parker than even Gillespie did, and made substantial contributions to bebop. But he wanted to blaze a path of his own and did so by bringing an intimate attention to tone and phrasing.

On what would have been his 100th birthday, take a look back on the staggering impact of his work and its continued relevance: https://bit.ly/3Q1RR16

Maybe the question isn’t “Does music learning help maths?”

Maybe it’s:
How does music learning shape the way students learn?

Music learning is a workout for self-regulation, constantly practising when to pause, when to push forward, and how to adjust along the way.

In every lesson, children manage impulses, shift tempo, control emotions, and start again after mistakes. These repeated moments of stopping, recalibrating, and continuing build the regulation skills they need to thrive in the classroom.

Music builds more than musicians. It builds self-regulation.
