Myth: Habitat gives homes away.
Truth: Families work, invest, and buy their homes.

It’s a hand-up—not a handout.

Lou Behrens started volunteering with Habitat after retiring from a 33-year career as an engineer at IBM in 2014, but his connection to the organization started even earlier. “I was first involved with Habitat when my son did his Eagle Scout project,” he said.

For Lou, one of the most meaningful parts of volunteering is working alongside others towards a shared and worthwhile goal.

“My favorite memories are the house dedications.”
