Last year the New Mexico Outdoor Recreation awarded the Town of Red River $99,999 to support and repair outdoor trail infrastructure that will support access to recreation as well as protect vital watershed in the Carson National Forest. The Red River Offroad Coalition in cooperation with the Questa office of the U.S. Forest Service - Carson National Forest will complete the work, focusing primarily on the forest roads in the Greenie Peak area. The Carson National Forest is identified as one of the top 5 watersheds in the nation. Balancing the access to outdoor recreation while protecting a precious resource is the goal of the RROC.
The RROC is very proud to do this important work for our area that wholly relies on outdoor recreation tourism as a resource for the local economy, small businesses and jobs. Work began in April 2026 and should complete by the fall of 2027. We thank all of the Federal & State departments that make this collaboration possible.

Outdoor Recreation Trails+ Grant recipients will work to improve trails and outdoor access across New Mexico.

Hey y'all, just the annual reminder that the majority of the forest road system of Greenie Peak and Midnight Meadows will be closed til June 15th for elk calving season. The good news is that Sawmill Road, Cabresto Lake are still open and the other forest roads we all love around Red River open back up today! Goose Lake is still snowed in at the top, so no one on regular wheels has made it there yet. Another reminder that it's illegal to drive off the forest roads, so going around puddles in the road or through meadows is a bad choice.
The RROC has a big announcement coming, so follow us for updates.

A current view from the Greenie Peak trail system. The forest roads there are open for wheeled use thanks to an early opening by the USFS. These specific roads will close again from May 1 - June 15 for elk calving. Midnight Meadows remains closed.
Please note that driving wheeled vehicles through any meadows, grasslands or protected areas, even if covered in snow, in the Carson National Forest Is prohibited.
Goose Lake Road, Pioneer Creek Road and the Old Red River Pass have annual posted closures until May 1.
Valle Vidal roads have seasonal closures, as well. Please consult https://www.fs.usda.gov/r03/carson/alerts/valle-vidal-annual-closures
for specific closures.

03/12/2026

Please be advised that the Carson National Forest has rescinded the trail closure of the Greenie Peak Trail system for wheeled vehicles, effective today. Access for wheeled vehicles, including off-highway vehicles (OHVs), has been reinstated in accordance with standard forest use regulations.

It should be noted, however, that trail conditions remain partially hazardous. While the majority of the trail system is dry and passable, localized areas of significant snow accumulation persist. All users are strongly advised to exercise due caution when traversing the trail system and are discouraged from operating OHVs through snow-covered terrain.

Recent incidents involving operators becoming stuck in snow-covered areas have necessitated emergency intervention. Please be advised that the Red River Fire Department Search and Rescue team is authorized to respond to and facilitate the safe extraction of individuals in distress. However, this agency bears no responsibility for the recovery of disabled or stuck vehicles. The retrieval, towing, and any associated costs related to vehicle extraction are the sole legal and financial responsibility of the vehicle owner and/or operator.

We ask that you share this information with your friends, family, and guests prior to accessing the trail system.

Work on the Old Red River Pass has been completed! We thank Sanchez Construction for their great work on these roads, as usual, as well as the U.S. Forest Service - Carson National Forest for their cooperation in these projects. We all share the same goal of keeping these forest roads open and available.
Watch your email for 2025 Membership Invoices. Below is a pic of the back of this year's tee shirt. The front says "2025 RROC Member". Make sure to include your shirt size on your payment. We'll have small through 4x available. Thanks to all for the support and kind words.

The work in the narrows on Goose Lake Road is complete and we thank Sanchez Construction for the great job. Work like this wouldn't be possible without the help of our members' donations, as well as the partnership with the U.S. Forest Service - Carson National Forest.

Expect delays on the Old Red River Pass on Monday/Tuesday as we'll be doing some grader work.

We caught a short video when the dozer was coming down.

Thursday morning update: Work continues today on Goose Lake Road in the narrows. The bulldozer won't back up for you if you decide to go up, so expect long delays. Continue to recommend to avoid the area. Please don't make their work harder or more dangerous than it is. The RROC does this work to ensure these roads stay open for your enjoyment year after year.

The RROC will be performing work on Goose Lake Road starting Wednesday, June 18th and concluding sometime Thursday, June 19th. While the road won't be completely closed; a bulldozer will be working in the narrows. Expect extended delays of up to and over one hour.
Recommendations are to avoid the area.
