💸Money Monday: Economic Series - Economic Profit vs. Accounting Profit📈
In economics, profit means more than just “money left over.”💰
Accounting profit looks at direct revenues minus direct expenses. Economic profit also includes opportunity cost, what your time, money, and effort could have earned elsewhere. A business can show a positive accounting profit, but still have a negative economic profit if the owner could have earned more doing something different.💲
Economics forces us to think not just about visible costs, but also the hidden tradeoffs.📉

🇺🇸 In honor of Memorial Day Weekend, we wanted to highlight the incredible Military History of Montgomery County, Iowa. 🇺🇸
Montgomery County has a military history unlike any other place in America, a legacy of courage, sacrifice, and service that spans every major conflict since the Civil War. From the young men of Company M, to the families who waited anxiously at home, our county has carried the weight of war with uncommon strength and unity.
Red Oak and the surrounding communities have sent soldiers into every U.S. conflict since the Civil War. But it was World War II that forever shaped our identity. More than 1,100 Montgomery County residents served in WWII. Many served in Company F (Villisca) and Company M (Red Oak) of the 168th Infantry Regiment, 34th “Red Bull” Division.
Red Oak suffered one of the highest per‑capita casualty rates in the entire United States. On March 6, 1943, more than 100 telegrams arrived in Red Oak in a single day, a devastating moment that still echoes through our community’s memory.
In 1944, the U.S. Navy honored our community’s sacrifice by christening the USS Red Oak Victory, a cargo and ammunition ship that served in the Pacific theater.
Despite dangerous missions, the ship never lost a single crew member, a point of pride still felt today.
Montgomery County has built a powerful culture of honoring its heroes. Consider learning more through the organizations below:

▪ The WWII Memorial Museum at the restored Restored BN Depot and WW II Museum preserves stories, artifacts, and the memory of those who served.

▪ The Montgomery County Veterans Memorial Court of Honor began in 1961 with 52 flags and has grown into a massive living memorial

▪ At Evergreen Cemetery, more than 1,000 flags fly each Memorial Day, a breathtaking sea of red, white, and blue honoring local veterans.

If you’ve ever thought the Montgomery County Courthouse looks like something out of a storybook, you’re right! And it even has a “sister.” 🏛️
Built in 1890–1891, the Montgomery County Courthouse stands as one of Iowa’s finest examples of Romanesque Revival architecture, designed by the Milwaukee firm H.C. Koch & Co. But here’s the part most people don’t know: 👉 The Jefferson County Courthouse in Fairfield Iowa is nearly identical, just reversed. Both courthouses were designed by H.C. Koch, making them architectural siblings across the state.
Some History: Long before the iconic clock tower rose over Red Oak, the county’s first courthouse was a log cabin in Frankfort, where juries deliberated outside on the prairie. When the county seat moved to Red Oak in the 1860s, the courthouse was literally put on sleds, pulled by oxen, dragged through a blizzard, and lost in the snow and found later on a homestead. 🌨 Yes, Montgomery County once lost an entire courthouse.❄😮
Construction on the current courthouse began on July 4, 1890, and it was completed the next year.
Key features include:
▪️Rusticated limestone base & red brick upper stories
▪️Towers, turrets, finials, and a dramatic clock tower
▪️Richardsonian Romanesque style, popular in the late 19th century
The building cost $100,000 to construct, a massive investment at the time, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.
The Montgomery County Courthouse is a symbol of resilience, craftsmanship, community identity, and with its architectural twin in Fairfield, it’s part of a unique chapter in Iowa’s courthouse history. ⏳Be sure to slow down a bit next time you drive by to soak in its beauty!

💸Money Monday: Economic Series - Marginal Decision Making 📈

Economics is often less about “all or nothing” decisions and more about decisions at the margin. 💰
Businesses usually don’t ask, “Should we produce or not?” They ask, “Should we produce one more unit?” Individuals do the same thing with time and money. Should I work one more hour? Spend one more dollar? Invest one more year into a project? 💲
Good decisions are often made by comparing the marginal benefit (the added benefit) to the marginal cost (the added cost). A lot of economics comes down to small adjustments, not dramatic changes. ⚖️

💸Monday Money - Economic Series: Sunk Costs🧠

One of the hardest concepts in business decision making is understanding sunk costs. 💰
A sunk cost is money, time, or effort that has already been spent and cannot be recovered. Good decisions should focus on future costs and future benefits, not simply on what has already been invested. People and organizations often continue poor projects because they think, “We’ve already put too much into this to stop now.”
❔Economics reminds us that past costs are history. The real question is: what decision makes the most sense going forward?
