Carbon County Historical Society & Museum

Carbon County Historical Society & Museum Our mission is to preserve and communicate the history, both human and natural, of Carbon County, Mt. Note, we will be open Monday, July 4th.

The Carbon County Museum is open to research Tues-Sat by appointment only, and open to all foot traffic, Tues/Sunday, closed Monday. Carbon County Historical Society & Museum History

History is not just about dates, names, and places. Preservation isn’t just about bricks and mortar. Both are about human values…about relationships between individuals and their communities that stretch from the pas

t through the present to the future. The museum was first established in 1959 by Alice Greenough to house the collection of her world-renowned rodeo family. The Carbon County Historical Society was formed in 1974 and took over the museum facility in 1980. In 1990, the three-story Labor Temple building was gifted to the Carbon County Historical Society by an anonymous donor. The Labor Temple was built in 1909, entirely by the Red Lodge Miners Local No. 1771, and put on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The historical society reopened the museum's doors with a newly remodeled basement and first floor in 1999.

Help Us Fundraise!!!

The Carbon County Historical Society & Museum is partnering with author Jeff McNeish to reprint his trilogy of books about the Smith Mine Disaster near Bearcreek, Montana in 1943. This tragic event remains Montana's worst coal mining disaster, and Jeff's books provide a detailed and personal account of its impact on the community. The books, which were previously self-published, are now out of print, making it difficult for people to access this important piece of local history.

We are seeking support to cover the printing costs for 50 copies of each of the three books. These books will be sold at the Carbon County Historical Society & Museum, a local non-profit dedicated to preserving and sharing the region's rich history. The funds raised from these sales will help maintain and renovate the Museum, ensuring it remains a valuable resource for the community. Additionally, your support will help Jeff McNeish, a local author with familial ties to victims of the disaster, continue his important work.

By contributing to this fundraiser, you are helping to keep the story of the Smith Mine Disaster alive for future generations. Your generosity will make a meaningful difference for the Museum, the author, and everyone who values the preservation of our shared history. Thank you for considering a donation to this important cause. https://gofund.me/58f06a194

Explore the prehistoric world of dinosaurs in the Bighorn Basin with Jason P Schein!

Jason Schein is a writer, naturalist, explorer, educator, and a paleontologist. He grew up in Alabama, and with encouragement from his family, inherited and developed from an early age a deep love and fascination with nature - both past and present. Early memories of fossil-hunting trips around the state and the unbridled exhilaration accompanying every discovery fueled his imagination and drive through graduate school and into his professional career. He now dedicates his time to sharing and creating similar experiences with his own family and others.

Jason is the Founding Executive Director of the Elevation Science Institute (formerly known as the Bighorn Basin Paleontological Institute). He also serves as a researcher and educator within the organization.
