Beartooth Front Community Forum

Beartooth Front Community Forum We are a grassroots, nonpartisan organization that seeks to retain and enhance the quality of life in the Red Lodge, Montana, area.

The Beartooth Front Community Forum (BFCF) is a grassroots, nonpartisan organization that seeks to retain and enhance the quality of life in the Red Lodge, Montana, area. The front range of the Beartooth mountains is in the northeast corner of the greater Yellowstone ecosystem, home to wildlife including black and grizzly bears, elk, deer, moose, and wolves. Red Lodge, the Carbon County seat, is a

former coal-mining town with recreation-based tourism and a character-filled history. BFCF focuses on public education and involvement, and particularly seeks to promote thoughtful, constructive dialogue on issues affecting the region. BFCF seeks to identify areas of consensus, and complete projects that achieve widely-held goals. With miniscule operating budgets, BFCF frequently takes a low public profile, supporting existing nonprofit and governmental organizations in their efforts to serve the public. Past BFCF efforts have assisted in the creation of the first Red Lodge master land use plan, the creation of the Boys and Girls Club of Carbon County, and a bearproof garbage container program designed to reduce human-bear conflicts. Forums have also given local residents a chance to learn about and shape responses to issues including living with wildlife, economic development, motorcycle tourism, technology infrastructure, and strengthening the link between schools and the community.

In June 2022, heavy rains and rapidly melting snow led to historic flooding in the Upper Yellowstone River Basin. Swollen rivers forced the evacuation of 10,000 visitors in Yellowstone National Park, while devastating critical infrastructure like bridges and roads, including the North Entrance Road between Gardiner and Mammoth Hot Springs.

Now, the National Park Service is asking for public input on an environmental assessment it released with the Federal Highway Administration outlining options for a new permanent alignment for the North Entrance Road. The assessment outlines the environmental consequences for each option, including the potential effects on wildlife. The alternative reconstruction plans are now open for public comment through February 4, 2026.

BFCF is a grassroots, nonpartisan organization. We sponsor community forums to educate, share information, promote thoughtful, constructive dialogue, and encourage engagement on issues affecting our community, Carbon County, and the Beartooth Front. The objective of our community forums is to explore issues or topics in depth, identify areas of consensus, foster future community actions and projects that achieve widely held goals.

Please consider donating to the Beartooth Front Community Forum during the Fun Run!

Beartooth Front Community Forum focuses on public education and involvement, and particularly seeks to promote thoughtful, constructive dialogue on issues affecting the region.

The Beartooth Front Community Forum (BFCF) will continue to promote community discussions about the future along the Beartooth Front through the “Outlook 2030: Planning for Change” series. Sponsor a community-wide forum to engage in discussion around growth-related topics and weigh tools and solutions to mitigate the impacts.

Each of our 2021/2022 webinars engaged 30-60 people. Because of these webinars, there is a greater awareness in the community of issues we face when managing and planning for growth and the resultant impacts on our quality of life.

Due to the continuation of COVID, all forums were held as webinars. We hope to return to an in-person, community-wide forum this fall discussing community resiliency and adaptation to rapid growth and environmental changes. Contributed funds would cover expenses associated with in-person forums, such as conference room rental, complimentary food and beverages, keynote speaker expenses, and possible continuation of educational webinars in 2023.
