Alabama Forestry Commission Issues Fire Restrictions for the Weekend

MONTGOMERY, AL — With forecasts calling for elevated wind speeds and a dry front passage across the state, the Alabama Forestry Commission (AFC) strongly discourages any outdoor burning until conditions improve. The agency also points to dropping relative humidity and an increase in wind speed on Saturday as especially concerning.

With the anticipation of critical fire weather conditions, AFC is issuing a Fire Danger Advisory on Friday, March 27. The potential for critical fire weather elevates on Saturday, March 28, increasing the threat issued to a Fire Alert. By Sunday, March 29, the potential for critical fire weather decreases slightly, lowering the threat issued to a Fire Danger Advisory.

The combination of these conditions creates a greater-than-average potential for outdoor fires to escape easily and spread rapidly, taking longer – and more of the agency’s firefighting resources – to contain and ultimately control. Fast-moving wildfires not only destroy property and forests but also threaten the lives of citizens and endanger firefighters.

Prescribed burn permits will be limited to only Certified Prescribed Burn Managers on Friday. Permits for outdoor burning will not be issued to anyone on Saturday. The AFC plans to resume regular permit issuing on Sunday, March 29, provided improved weather conditions. Anyone who burns a field, grassland, or woodland without a burn permit may be subject to prosecution for committing a Class B misdemeanor.

In the last seven days, 147 wildfires have burned approximately 5,600 acres of forestland across the state. This includes a large wildfire in Wilcox County (963 acres), one for 464 acres in Montgomery County, one for 505 acres in Marengo, and four others over 200 acres in Choctaw, Covington, Etowah, and Walker counties.

The Alabama Forestry Commission is the state agency committed to protecting Alabama’s invaluable forest assets as well as its citizens. To report a wildfire, call (800) 392-5679. For more information on the current wildfire situation in the state or any other forestry-related issues, contact your local AFC office or visit the agency website at www.forestry.alabama.gov

Volunteer firefighters : The Backbone of Our Community

Tonight I had the privilege of attending the Covington County Fire Association meeting, where I was welcomed and had the opportunity to speak with our volunteer firefighters about working together and sharing our radio channel so we can better communicate during emergencies.

I want the people of Covington County to understand something very important about these men and women.

Our volunteer firefighters are truly the salt of the earth. They are hardworking people with regular jobs and families who still answer the call when their community needs them. When the pager goes off or the siren sounds, they leave what they are doing to respond to fires, accidents, medical emergencies, storms, and disasters.

Many times, they are the first ones on scene, putting themselves in harm’s way to protect others.

These firefighters train countless hours and give up their personal time because they have a genuine desire to keep our communities safe and save lives.

In rural counties like ours, volunteer fire departments are the backbone of emergency response, and our communities are stronger because of their service.

I am proud to stand beside them and continue strengthening the partnership between the Covington County Sheriff’s Office and our local fire departments so that together we can better serve the people of this county.

To every volunteer firefighter in Covington County — thank you for what you do. Your dedication and commitment do not go unnoticed.

Service, sacrifice, and neighbors helping neighbors — that’s what makes a community strong.

❄️ WINTER WEATHER OUTLOOK – PLEASE STAY INFORMED ❄️

A powerful and potentially dangerous winter storm is expected to impact parts of the southern U.S. this weekend. For our area, it is still too early to determine exact impacts, and confidence remains low at this time. However, forecasters are currently watching two possible scenarios based on the storm’s track:

🔹 Scenario #1 – More Likely (right now):
The storm tracks farther north through Mississippi and Alabama. Warmer, humid air moves in from the Gulf, which would favor rain over winter weather locally. Some guidance also hints at the potential for thunderstorms near the coast late Saturday night into Sunday.

🔹 Scenario #2 – Less Likely (right now):
The storm tracks farther south across the northern Gulf. Colder air pushes into the region, allowing rain to change over to freezing rain or sleet, mainly in interior counties. While amounts are uncertain, this scenario could lead to dangerous travel and infrastructure impacts.

👉 Forecast trends over the past 24 hours have shifted northward, increasing confidence in Scenario #1. That said, we are still 3–4 days out, and conditions can change quickly.

🥶 Looking Ahead to Next Week:
Behind the storm, a bitterly cold airmass is expected to move into the area. A hard freeze is likely for several nights, with the coldest night expected Monday night, when interior areas could see lows in the mid to upper teens.

Please continue to monitor forecasts and official updates. We will share additional information as confidence increases.

‼️Attention Loango community: ‼️

With the possibilities of bad weather we ask that you make sure you have plenty of water stocked up, generators have plenty of gas, and you stay in a safe place.

It is safest to be in a room without windows, such as a bathroom, and large closets.

We have had trees down and power lines so far; so, please stay safe and try to stay off the roads.

We ask that if you see a power line down or any trees blocking the road to call 911 in an emergency or they have a non emergent line of 334-427-4911

If you live in a mobile home or camper we advice that if you can, please go to a storm shelter or a safer place, as this storm could be dangerous to those that live in mobile homes.

As always, stay safe, and God bless!
