Meet the Red Lake School District Interim Superintendent!

Ikwezens indigoo Ojibwemong. Amanda Norman indizhinikaaz zhaanganaashiimong. Gaawaabaabiganikaag indoonjibaa. Makwa indoodem. Niminwendam omaa ayaayan.

• I am from White Earth Nation. I grew up in Mountain Iron, MN. I graduated from the Native Teacher Prep program at The College of Saint Scholastica in 2003. I double majored in Ojibwe Language and Culture Education (K-12) and Elementary Education (K-6) with Science (5-8). I also played college basketball there.

• I taught Ojibwe Language and Culture for 11 years in all K-12 grade areas, while serving as the American Indian Studies Coordinator for Elk River School District and Saint Paul Public Schools.

• This is my first year as an interim superintendent and 10th year in the district. I have been the PK-2 Principal at RLEC for the past 8 years, and I loved it! I was a principal for a total of 11 years.

• Prior to being a leader in Red Lake, I was the principal and Director of Niigaane Immersion program at Bug-O-Nay-Ge-Shig for 3 years. I also served intermittently as superintendent. I have been a licensed principal since 2015 and a licensed superintendent since 2017. All 23 years in education have been dedicated to Indigenous leadership.

• I am currently on the Board of Directors for the Minnesota Indian Education Association (MIEA). My PK-2 SLT at RLEC presented at last year’s MIEA conference to share how they are naturally integrating Ojibwemowin into their Morning Meetings.

• My spouse, Carly, teaches math at Red Lake Secondary Complex. We have a 16-year-old daughter named Emma and a 7-year-old son named Jaxon. We have a cat named Archie and a dog named Milo.

• I am excited to lead Red Lake School District as the Interim Superintendent this school year! My goal is to provide Indigenous leadership to our students and Red Lake school community. We Love You Here!

Welcome LaTayla Pemberton to Red Lake School District! She will be teaching Kindergarten this year at RLEC.

We also want to welcome Nathan Salsheider who will be an SSP at RLHS and Marcus Tyler who will be an Ojibwe Language Instructer at RLEC!
