Our current picture is USS Nimitz (CVN-68) a supercarrier of the United States Navy, and the lead ship of her class. One of the largest warships in the world, she was laid down, launched and commissioned as CVAN-68 but was redesignated CVN 68 (nuclear-powered multimission aircraft carrier) on 30 June 1975 as part of a fleet realignment. The Nimitz class carriers have a lifespan of approximately 50 years. Nimitz itself is currently scheduled to be eventually replaced around 2025 by the Gerald R. Ford–class aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy, CVN-79. The exact date of the ship's inactivation and decommissioning will likely depend on Defense Department funding considerations. In FY 2025 according to CNO report to congress in 2014, the US will have 11 CVN's.

When did the US Navy Sea Cadet Corp first allow young women to become cadets?
• It was also the year the first class of women was inducted at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
• At Panmunjom, North Korea, 2 United States soldiers are killed while trying to chop down part of a tree in the Korean Demilitarized Zone which had obscured their view.
• The space shuttle Enterprise is rolled out of a California hangar. Richard Harrison Truly retired as a Vice Admiral in the United States Navy was the pilot for Enterprise on two of the first 5 missions.
It was 1976, I wanted to use the United States Bicentennial celebration but that made it too easy!

When was the Naval Sea Cadet Corps first organized? I t may surprise you. Dwight D. Eisenhower was President, The USS Wisconsin is decommissioned leaving the United States Navy without an active battleship for the first time since 1896 (it is recommissioned October 22, 1988).The nuclear powered submarine USS Nautilus becomes the first vessel to cross the North Pole under water. And of course the big one... the U.S. Army inducts Elvis Presley, transforming The King Of Rock & Roll into U.S. private #53310761. It was 1958.

If you've been invited to this page take a look and pass along the information to anyone you might think would want the opportunity to join an organization that teaches community stewardship through the value system of the military. The Naval Sea Cadet Corps was established by the Navy League of the United States at the request of the Navy in 1958. In cooperation with the Navy and Coast Guard, the Cadet Corps allows youth to sample military life without any obligation to join the Armed Forces.
