Who knew a milk jug could help build early reading skills? ♻️📚✨
This simple DIY scooper turned out to be one of our favorite low-cost learning activities — and the best part? It started in the recycling bin. 💚
As children scoop, pour, carry, and transfer objects, they’re building:
✨ Hand-eye coordination
✨ Fine motor strength
✨ Bilateral coordination
✨ Focus and visual tracking
These are all foundational skills that support early reading and writing development. The same coordination children use to track and scoop objects helps prepare their eyes and hands to follow words across a page, hold a pencil, and develop confidence as early learners.
Plus, open-ended play with recycled materials encourages creativity, problem-solving, and imaginative thinking while teaching children that everyday items can be reused in meaningful ways. 🌎✨
HOW TO MAKE IT:
1️⃣ Rinse and dry an empty plastic milk jug
2️⃣ Leave the handle side intact
3️⃣ Cut off the bottom of the jug
4️⃣ Cut diagonally from the bottom toward the top to create a scoop shape
5️⃣ Trim rough edges
6️⃣ Cover edges with duct tape for safety and durability
7️⃣ Fill a bin with balls, sensory items, sand, or outdoor materials and PLAY! 🌈
You don’t need expensive toys for meaningful learning opportunities. Sometimes the best learning tools are already waiting in the recycling bin. ♻️💚
