On September 11, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) solemnly pauses to observe Patriot Day and the National Day of Service and Remembrance to honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost in the horrific events 24 years ago.

These attacks forever changed our nation and the world. Despite the unimaginable tragedy, they also showcased the indomitable spirit of the American people. In the face of terrorism, our nation united and supported one another. Flags flew high in homes across the country, communities rallied to help first responders, and a sense of determination overcame our differences.

This day is not just a day to remember, but also a day to find purpose.

The VFW understands the importance of service and sacrifice, and we encourage Americans to come together on Patriot Day and the National Day of Service and Remembrance to honor the memory of those lost on 9/11 by building a world they would be proud of. We owe it to the families and loved ones of the nearly 3,000 killed that day to honor them by remembering that we are a stronger nation when we stand united. Let's channel the resilience and unity we showed 24 years ago and pledge to be a force for good.
