One year ago, a group of humans came together to help people, because it's all they could think about doing. They embarked on an unexpected journey, where every day brought new challenges, new surprises, new experiences. They touched a lot of lives, and a lot of people and moments touched theirs, changed theirs. They found that, in the face of tragedy, we're all family.

An update on the Seaside Boardwalk fires: Firefighters currently have the massive blaze under control. But this news did not come until after Seaside Heights emergency management coordinator William Hibell said 40 to 50 businesses were destroyed by the massive boardwalk fire, which is currently being contained by the trench built at Lincoln Avenue. The fire has engulfed roughly seven blocks, Boyd said. Firefighters tried to stop the inferno with a trench on Dupont Avenue, but the flames jumped over it.

After working so hard to bring the boardwalk back to prominence after Hurricane Sandy, may God bless these business owners, who are hopefully given another chance to rebuild and recover from another devastating disaster.

Our thoughts are with our friends and neighbors on the boardwalk and surrounding areas being affected by the current fire that is blazing in Seaside Park. Prayers are with the fire fighters, police and other first responders, along with the business owners as they battle to save and control the fire!

UPDATE: The boardwalk fire in Seaside Park has now spread to 20 businesses, and firefighters are being pulled back because of the intensity of the flames, The Star-Ledger has learned.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Arts Healing Hearts is a Sandy relief art program for kids – they bring weekly projects into the neighborhoods hit hardest, completely free of charge to the families. They want to expand services to other towns, but right now they need volunteers for the Monday after-school program in Highlands, and the Saturday program in Union Beach. Visit their website (still under construction but functioning!) www.artshealinghearts.com to get more information and to sign up. You can also visit their page to see all the projects they've done this year.

FEMA will pay for 90 percent of the cost of demolishing a house, hauling away the debris and dumping it in a landfill, said Ginger Rogan, deputy coordinator of Keansburg’s Office of Emergency Management.

While Keansburg, New Jersey is responsible for the balance, the municipality plans to pay for the bulk of its share through contributions from charities such as the Robin Hood Foundation, Holmdel Helps and RebuildRecover, Rogan said.

A special task force formed after Hurricane Sandy is urging more resilient and innovative housing construction, a more flexible electrical grid, reliable cell-phone and Internet service in disasters, and a dependable fuel supply chain.

The 200-page report was released today and can be downloaded from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development website.

Report released today offers 69 recommendations to cut red tape, rebuild communities and help small businesses.
