Father McGivney witnessed the devastating reality of Catholic immigrant families left destitute, a sight that motivated him to gather a small group of 12 men in the basement of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, Connecticut.
There, he formed the Knights of Columbus—an organization built on the strength of brotherhood and mutual support. He worked relentlessly to build this foundation, writing to pastors to win support for his vision in order to help Catholic families.
Father McGivney spent his life in tireless service, often working eighteen-hour days to recruit members and support those in need, eventually succumbing to pneumonia at the age of 38 physically tired and worn out .
At the time of Father Michael McGivney's death in 1890, the Knights of Columbus had approximately 6,000 members. This number reflects the early growth of the organization, which was founded in 1882 to support Catholic families, particularly in immigrant communities.
The Knights of Columbus has since expanded significantly, now having over 2.2 million members worldwide, providing billions in aid and essential financial security to Catholic families.
Fr.Mcgivney’s life is a powerful reminder that some legacies are built for the world that comes after us. Even when we do not live to see the full impact of our work, the act of doing good is always worth the sacrifice.
"For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me."
Blessed Michael McGivney, pray for us!
