Throughout each year, the alumni association holds benefit events, fundraisers, membership meetings, and group trips. Scott Allen Haines
Scott Haines, 78, passed away on October 2, 2026. Born September 8, 1948, he was a proud Penn State alumnus and a beloved teacher and coach in the Muhlenberg School District for more than 30 years. He loved his family, friends, football, good food, and dogs and after making two holes-in-one in golf, he found a new passion in pickleball. Scott was married first to Dorothy Breitegam and later to Jean Meo. He is survived by his children, Kristin Mangan and Thad Haines; stepchildren Amy Bartolone and C. Jeffrey Eshelman; grandchildren Matthew, Isabella and Sive; and his loyal dog Harry.
He leaves a rich legacy of laughter, love and friendship. He will be sorely missed.
A celebration of life will be held at Moselem Springs on Saturday November 7th at 1pm.

Lynn M. (Scott) DeFrees, 79, of Mt. Penn, passed away on Saturday morning, October 3, 2026, at Berks Heim.
Born June 30, 1947, in Williamsport, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Margaret G. (Vannatta) Scott and the late Walter P. Scott. Lynn and her husband of 50 years, John L. DeFrees, were married on March 18, 1967, at St. Mary's UCC, Reading, Pa.
Lynn spent most of her time managing the house and raising her sons. She always found time to be more than a homemaker, and she always had a side business, from Amway to Avon to Mary Kay. Her work always revolved around people, and she loved meeting new people. When her youngest son was in middle school she got her real estate license and was a realtor for many years.
Lynn was a 1965 graduate of Exeter High School. She later attended Empire Beauty Academy. Her real passion was sewing and making quilts. She had a real talent for it, and she loved to share what she made with her family and with others.
She is survived by two sons, John S. "Scott" DeFrees and his wife, Jennifer (Devine) DeFrees, of Fleetwood, and Todd E. DeFrees, of Harrisburg; her grandchildren, Alexandra, Mackenzie, Isabella, and Mason; her great-granddaughter, Lyra; and her brother, Richard D. Scott, of Colorado. She was preceded in death by her husband, John L. DeFrees, and her brother, George W. Scott.
A graveside service will be held Monday morning, October 12, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Berks County Memorial Gardens, Maidencreek Township.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Lynn's memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or at stjude.org.

Class of 1960
Ronald G. Stitzman

Ronald “Rocky” G. Stitzman, 84, of Exeter Township, passed away on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at Reading Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Carol E. (Batz) Stitzman, with whom he shared 63 wonderful years of marriage.
Born in Reading in January 1942, he was the son of the late Kirk B. and Evelyn (Wilkinson) Stitzman. At a young age, Ronald attended school in Germany through the seventh grade before returning to the United States with his family. He graduated from Exeter High School in 1960, where he earned numerous athletic honors and medals, particularly excelling in track and field.
Ron and his wife, Carol, were former members of the U.S. Amateur Ballroom Dance Association, Lehigh Chapter. He was also a long standing member of the Reading Liederkranz. Ron had a lifelong passion for karate, practicing and teaching the martial arts for more than 30 years. He took great pride in sharing his knowledge with others and helping students develop discipline and confidence.
In addition to his wife, Carol, Ron is survived by his daughter, Rochelle A. Bendetti, wife of Daniel, of Reading; his son, Eric R. Stitzman, husband of Tara Snyder, of Mohnton; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; his sister-in-law, Linda Schwank, of Pennside; and a niece and nephew.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Kirk Stitzman Jr. and Richard Stitzman.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Monday, October 5, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Bean Funeral Homes, 6 Fairlane Road, Reading, PA 19606. Amy S. Landis, Certified Celebrant, will officiate. Burial of the urn will follow at Forest Hills Memorial Park.
Family and friends are invited to gather at the funeral home from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service.

Donald A. Boarder, 85, of Exeter Township, passed away on August 19, 2026. Born in Reading, PA on August 19, 1941, he was the son of Orion G. and Mabel C. (Hauder) Boarder. He also had an older brother Orion. They lived in the city of Reading until Donald's senior year of high school. That's when his family moved to Exeter Township where he became a graduate of Exeter Township Senior High School. He then spent a year studying at Kutztown University before entering the work force full time.

He spent 35 years at GPU Nuclear Corporation where he worked as a lab technician doing inspections, failure analysis, and testing at various power plants both nuclear and coal alike, including Three Mile Island where he was a part of the team that investigated the reactor failure. He loved this job so much that even after retirement he went back to work for them part time. He did that until the age of 70.

Donald is survived by his four children, Eric F. Boarder, husband of Gail, Kelly Jo Boarder, Matthew D. Boarder, husband of Catrina, and Taryn Karas, wife of Jeffrey; eight grandchildren, Erica and Owen Boarder; Mason, Clare, Leah, and Whitney Boarder; and Kyla and Jeffrey Karas; and a great grandson, Logan Griffith. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Orion G. Boarder, and also his grandson, Joshua R. Griffith.

Besides the love and passion he had for his family, friends, and job. He also enjoyed other interests like doing his daily crossword puzzles in the Reading Eagle newspaper, reading his National Geographic magazines, and watching just about every sport and crime drama there is on TV. He also enjoyed playing in a golf league every Sunday with his friends from GPU until he retired. Then him and his brother Orion started a weekly poker game with friends. He also loved taking vacations with his family all over the United States. Always driving of course, as Don would not get on a airplane. Zig zagging across the country with Don was more entertaining than the destinations, on occasion.

He also had a true passion for flowers. He always had vases of flowers decorating the house. He always said if he hadn't been a lab technician he would have been a florist. He was definitely a man who lived life to the fullest.

James R. Gaugler, 65, of Muhlenberg, passed away on Tuesday, September 15, 2026 in his home. Born in Ephrata, he was the son of the late Judith L. Bione and Albert P. Bione. James graduated from Exeter High School. He was a security guard at Cambridge Lee for many years then worked at Redners as a grocery clerk for six years.

James is survived by his former wife., Tricia A. (Himmelberger) Gaugler, and his son James Dale Gaugler and his girlfriend Rebecca Shupp. He is also survived by her siblings; Jay Gaugler, widower of Heidi and companion of Erika Walker, Julie Kline, widower of Jesse, as well as his nephews Landon and Noah.

Services will be held privately at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Animal Rescue League, 58 Kennel Road, Birdsboro, PA 19508. Kelly Raschel Ringler Nguyen, 53, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 31, 2026.

Born in Reading, Kelly was the daughter of the late Thomas F. and Sharon J. (Keller) Ringler. She was the loving wife of Thao Nguyen, with whom she shared 28 years of marriage.

Kelly was a devoted mother to Holly Behm and Evan Nguyen, and raising her children was one of the greatest joys of her life. She cherished them and poured her heart into their education and growth. Kelly homeschooled Evan for most of his elementary years through high school, embracing the opportunity to nurture his curiosity and love of learning.

Education was a lifelong passion for Kelly. She graduated from Exeter Township Senior High School and went on to earn both her undergraduate degree and a Master's degree in Library Science from Kutztown University. She dedicated her career to helping students discover the joy of learning and served as a school librarian in Boyertown and Pottsgrove school districts.

Kelly will be remembered for her, warm disposition, positive energy, strength, and loving heart. Her family and friends will deeply miss her presence.

In addition to her parents, Kelly was predeceased by her uncle, Curtis Keller.

Services will be held on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at 1:30 pm at Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, 739 Penn Ave., West Reading, PA 19611. The family will host friends and relatives for a viewing from 11:30 am until the time of the service. Interment will follow at Forest Hills Memorial Park.

Brian J. Jennings, 61, of Pottstown, PA, passed away on Monday, June 20, 2026 at Hershey Medical Center. Born in Reading, PA, he was the son of the late Ewald J. and Elizabeth (Wyida) Jennings.

He graduated from Exeter High School, class of 1982, and from Reading Area Community College in 2012 with his Associates Degree in Computer Technology. He worked at Prime Therapeutics as a computer programmer. Brian was a devoted sport enthusiast, and through that passion he made lifelong friendships. He loved attending games and could often be found cheering (or jeering) the Philadelphia Eagles, Flyers and Phillies. Despite his local pride, his favorite team was the L.A. Rams.

Brian is survived by his two brothers, Allan V. Jennings, husband of Beth J., and Craig C. Jennings, and his three nephews, Matthew Jennings, Steven Jennings, and Zachary Jennings.

William Dennis Arner ("Dennis") August 20, 1951 – August 8, 2026

William Dennis Arner, known to everyone simply as Dennis, passed away on August 8, 2026, just shy of his 75th birthday. Born on August 20, 1951, at Saint Joseph’s Hospital, Dennis brought energy, joy, and a spirit of adventure to every room he entered.

A successful and dedicated realtor, Dennis built a career helping others find their place in the world. Outside of work, he was always the life of the party and embraced life in the fast lane. He had a passion for cars—with a special fondness for Porsches—and loved the freedom of the open road. Whether setting sail on open waters for a cruise, relaxing during trips to Ocean City, Maryland, or traveling to destinations around the globe, he cherished every journey. Beyond his career and hobbies, Dennis possessed a gentle heart and a deep, lifelong devotion to animals, caring for creatures great and small.

He is survived by his beloved children, William James Arner and Julie Marlo Arner, who will continue to carry his vibrant, adventurous spirit in their hearts.

In accordance with his wishes, services will be held privately. To honor Dennis’s lifelong love for animals, donations in his memory to your choice of animal rescue or welfare organization would be greatly appreciated.

Cathy L. (Moyer) Hafer, 59, of Shillington, passed away unexpectedly but peacefully on Thursday, August 6, 2026, at Reading Hospital.

Born in Reading, Cathy was the beloved daughter of Ralph Moyer Jr. and Charlotte (Rigg) Moyer of Exeter. She was a proud graduate of Exeter High School, Class of 1984, and spent many years working in sales for several companies, most recently at Babies "R" Us, where her warm personality and caring nature made lasting connections with both coworkers and customers.

Above all else, Cathy cherished her family. Nothing in the world brought her greater joy than being "Mimi" to her grandchildren. She adored each of them and delighted in spoiling them every chance she could. Her love for her family was unconditional, and the memories she created with them will be treasured forever.

Cathy had one of the kindest hearts imaginable. She was the type of person who would give the shirt off her back to someone in need, expecting nothing in return. She had the biggest, most beautiful smile that could brighten any room and the silliest sense of humor. She had a remarkable way of finding light, even in life's most difficult moments, and knew just how to make everyone laugh. Whether she was dressing up with the kids for Halloween, letting her granddaughters cover her in makeup, or simply filling a room with laughter, Cathy had a special gift for making her family feel deeply loved. Her greatest gift wasn't simply making people laugh-it was making the people she loved feel loved. Her gentle spirit, generosity, and unwavering love touched countless lives and left the world a little brighter simply because she was in it.

Cathy was an avid animal lover whose home and heart were always shared with her beloved pets. She leaves behind her faithful dogs, Hydra, Bronson, and Angus, and her cherished cats, Neegan and MoMo, all of whom she loved dearly. Cathy also loved the beach, where she found happiness and peace, and enjoyed tending her vegetable garden. While her vegetables flourished, she would jokingly admit that flowers never seemed to survive under her care-a little truth that always brought a smile to those who knew and loved her.

Cathy is survived by her loving companion, Jeremy Shumard; her parents, Ralph Moyer Jr. and Charlotte Moyer; her children, Sara B. Hafer, companion of Joe Pianka, Benjamin A. Hafer, companion of Angela Sharpe, and Rebecca G. Hafer; her stepdaughters, Rebecca, companion of Mike, and Felicia; her beloved grandchildren, Stella, Delilah, Clayton, Brianna, Hunter, Benny Jr., Ava, Alex, and Eden; her siblings, Ralph Moyer III, Daniel Moyer, and Lynnanne Moyer; and many extended family members, beloved nieces and nephews, and dear friends who will miss her beyond words.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Cathy's life on Friday, August 14, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Lutz Funeral Home, Inc., 2100 Perkiomen Avenue, Reading, PA 19606.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Rescue League, 58 Kennel Road, Birdsboro, PA 19508, in honor of Cathy's lifelong love of animals.

Though our hearts are broken by her loss, we find comfort in knowing that the love Cathy shared so freely will continue to live on in her family, her friends, and in every life she touched. She will be missed beyond words, deeply loved, and forever remembered.
