Yesterday, we wrapped up our first session by reflecting on gratitude and all the things we have to be thankful for. We also took time to recognize Indigenous Peoples Day and honor the people who came before us. Pennsylvania is home to many Indigenous people, including the Lenape and the Susquehannock. There is also recorded history of other tribes who migrated to Pennsylvania! Thank you to the Indigenous communities who continue to care for this land and the generations of knowledge, traditions, and stewardship that have shaped the places we now call home.

As we learn and grow on the land, we are reminded to be grateful not only for what nature provides, but also for those who have cared for it before us and those who continue to protect it today. 🌿🤎

As the leaves begin to fall, you might feel tempted to rake them up but what if you left them a little longer?

These fallen leaves provide a cozy, protective habitat for little creatures like the red-backed salamander! During this time of year, these tiny amphibians roam beneath leaf litter, decaying logs, and rocks in search of small invertebrates like ants, beetles, spiders, and springtails. They also store extra energy as fat in their tails to help them through the colder months ahead.

So before you rake away those leaves, remember that what might look like yard waste is actually a little ecosystem full of life! 🍂

Can you name that track?

This week, we explored the art of animal tracking! Tracking is about so much more than finding footprints, it’s learning to read the signs animals leave behind. From s**t and fur to tree markings, feeding signs, and more.

The art of tracking has been passed down through generations and continues to be an important skill used by hunters, naturalists, and those who spend time learning from the land. Every track tells a story and teaches us to slow down and observe.
