In 1890, the City of Lexington sold the property to the "trustees for the colored people of Lexington." Burials of African Americans continued here, but have tapered off since integration of local cemeteries in the 1960's. The pool of

volunteers maintaining the grounds has dwindled, and the property was falling into disrepair. Forest Grove Cemetery Project was established to take care of the grounds, and preserve the rich history of the people buried here.
