Dealing with substance abuse, alcoholism, or drug addiction is difficult. It is even more difficult when one is also struggling with mental health problems. There are countless women who suffer in silence with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder of substance abuse and mental health issues. Sadly, this can happen to any woman at any given time of her life. She may use alcohol and/or drugs to cope with unpleasant memories or feelings; to control pain or the intensity of moods; to face situations that are frightening or just to stay focused on daily tasks. The most common cause for the use of alcohol and drugs is unresolved trauma or a history of abuse.
Meet Stephanie S., who at the age of seven year’s old was repeatedly molested by an uncle until the age of fourteen. A frightened young woman, struggling with low self-esteem and promiscuity; Stephanie entered a life of prostitution, drug and alcohol addiction, and eventually homelessness. Until one day, Stephanie encountered law enforcement and the court system which resulted in a 120-day prison sentence. Upon release, Stephanie was ordered into a drug treatment program where she learned of her mental illness, including, Paranoia Schizophrenia, a Bi-Polar Disorder, Depression, and an Anxiety Disorder. During her time in drug treatment, Stephanie was empowered with knowledge of clean and sober living. She went through detoxification; managed withdrawal symptoms; received treatment for her mental health problems, including medication; received and participated in individual and group counseling to help maintain sobriety.
Stephanie S. successfully completed drug treatment and was advised to enter a transitional living program to develop structure and accountability. Relapses are a part of the recovery process. In the transitional living program, Stephanie received encouragement when slips and setbacks happened. She learned how to rebuild her life with the support of a “sister circle,” dedicated to helping women rewrite their stories. In this “sister circle,” Stephanie was given a chance to lean on others who knew exactly what she was going through and helped her learn from her unpleasant experiences. She became spiritually grounded; gainfully employed; became financially stable, including home ownership; remained committed to NA/AA meetings, and above all; learned to love herself, in spite of what her past looked like to others and to herself. Now celebrating 26 years of recovery, Stephanie maintains a loving relationship with her family and children and is dedicated to helping women find their path onto the road of recovery.
Sisters In Christ (SIC) is a trailblazing, Midwestern not-for-profit organization, with three unparalleled years of service to women from ages 18 and up, who have experienced: trauma; losses as a result of molestation, prostitution, drug addiction, severe mental health issues, and homelessness. We currently serve between 40 and 50 women in our Transitional (Faith Based) Living Program. The program manages (3) houses, Carolyn’s House of Faith, Serenity House and Habakkuk House, and operates as a federal 501c (3) and state of Missouri not-for-profit entity.
In the Transitional Living Program, women encounter a trauma free environment and sisterhood that catapults them into their intended purpose and best self. We teach healthy coping skills and strategies to minimize substance abuse, strengthen their relationships, and cope with life’s stressors, challenges, and disappointments. We also ensure the women share in the decision making process of their recovery and remain actively involved in setting personal goals. The women are encouraged to increase their spirituality for total healing and wholeness in their lives. They are shown how to turn impossibilities into possibilities and to be the best in spite of what they have experienced. We provide an enrichment network of equipping women with tools for empowerment and transformation into a rebuilt life of purpose. It is the mission of Sisters in Christ to encourage women to rewrite their stories onto a new page of life. We believe with the right support and treatment, women can overcome substance abuse and mental health issues, reclaim her sense of self, and get her life back on track.
