Dear friends,
PLEASE READ AND SHARE THIS VERY IMPORTANT MESSAGE..
We know you have liked this page because you don't want to tolerate injustices, certainly against veterans. There is a terrible injustice happening to our severely wounded veterans I want to make you aware of. In 2003 I saw a news piece about a soldier that lost both legs in Iraq. As a builder I knew everything about building homes, handicap accessible being an area I was familiar with. I assumed at that point there was a group building specially adapted homes for severely wounded veterans and went online looking to volunteer. I was shocked to learn there was no group established doing this. To me it was an injustice that I would not let stand. I googled how to start a non profit and founded Homes for our Troops. Ten years later and well over 100 homes donated to severely wounded veterans I am taking on a new mission. Ending the specially adapted housing crisis. You see there are around 3,000 vets that qualify and need these homes and its more than a few non profits can handle and veterans are falling through the cracks. I recently put out the story of Cpl Sue Downs, mom of two, two purple hearts and the loss of both legs in Afghanistan. She lost the home she bought and used her VA specially adapted housing grant of 64,900 on and now lives in a non handicap mobile home. I was outraged and we WILL build her a home. Our goal while doing so is to lobby for a law change. $65,000 grant is an insult to our veterans. They pay for TSGLI which is their Insurance through the military. In 2,005 our government passed a law adding a rider to the Insurance for Traumatic injury benefits up to $100K which increased the monthly premium of $26 a total of $1 making it $27 per month. This money was designed to help them financially for family flights to visit them in hospitals, hotels, paying bills or whatever else they need. Many of these veterans spend 2 or more years in the hospital after suffering these horrible injuries. We are proposing adding an SAH rider to pay these brave wounded warriors enough money to build specially adapted homes. This will end the current problem and ensure all of our most severely wounded veterans get the homes they earned and deserve, more importantly it fixes the problem FOREVER. This needs to be done and WE SHOULD ALL BE OUTRAGED that its not. I know I am! I have testified before Congress twice and as we build Sue a new home I promise that I will continue pushing our government to fix this problem, but I/WE need your help and support. Please like our page and visit our website and get involved in this effort.
Sincerely,
John Gonsalves
