Courtesy Boat Inspectors attend the four public boat ramps in Raymond, inspecting in-coming and out-going boats for plant and animal material to prevent the spread of invasive aquatic species into our lakes. CBIs are the point people in educating boaters on the dangers posed by invasives, the importance of inspection, and methods for doing their own inspections whenever they move their boat from one waterway to another. This is an outdoor position that may require you to work in any weather.

Qualifications: Inspectors must be 14 or older and enjoy spending time outdoors and meeting people. A friendly, outgoing attitude is required, along with the ability to work effectively and reliably without close supervision. Persons with good references, an interest in environmentalism and lake and watershed conservation, and connection to the Town of Raymond are especially encouraged to apply.

Peggy and Neil Jensen and Raymond Waterways volunteers surveyed the Dingley Brook this morning looking for milfoil.
The great news is none was found in the survey area!

There are many volunteers in Raymond who are part of the Invasive Plant Patrol (volunteers are known as IPPers, how fun!) program. If you are interested in learning more, reach out to Raymond Waterways and we will put you in touch with someone who can answer your questions!

From our friends on Panther Pond. Loons are special neighbors. Let's take extra care to take care of them.

BE LOON FRIENDLY!
• Obey the no-wake law within 200 feet of shore, and 300 feet for wake boats, no less than 15 ft deep water.
• Use lead-free tackle (good alternatives are made of steel, tin, and bismuth).
• Dispose of fishing line so it does not get tangled up in a loon’s feet or bill.
• If you live on a lake, use phosphorus-free fertilizer and plant shrubs as a buffer along the shoreline to reduce run-off.
• If you see a loon on a nest, keep your distance and watch with binoculars.
• Keep garbage out of reach of loon egg predators, like skunks and raccoons.

Sometimes boats go for a float without their people aboard. We can't blame them for wanting to spend more time on the water and less time at the dock, but we have found that boats without a captain are even less likely to return home than an angler who says they're on their last cast.

Always label your kayak, canoe, standup paddleboard, and other paddle craft with an If Found sticker. Doing so assists search and rescue responders in efficiently determining if a true emergency exists, prevents unnecessary searches, saves thousands of dollars in associated search costs, and enables the paddle craft to be returned home.

Get your FREE sticker from the MDIFW headquarters in Augusta or our Region A office in Gray.
