Saturday was an incredible night under the stars!

Nearly 65 Cub Scouts and family members from Pack 461 of Papillion, Nebraska, joined us for an unforgettable overnight adventure exploring the night sky. From the moment they arrived, this was a group ready to learn, play, and fully embrace the experience, even as temperatures dipped into a chilly night outdoors.

The evening began with the scouts working together with their leaders to set up tents across the property, followed by safe Solar viewing in the Boller-Sivill Observatory, then a delicious taco dinner that fueled everyone for the night ahead. Spirits were high as the group gathered inside the Kunkel Family Multipurpose Center for an engaging and entertaining “Inside the Summer Skies” program presented by Professor Sibbernsen. The energy in the room was electric, ending in cheers of joy and enthusiastic applause from scouts and families alike.

The excitement continued as Matt Anderson opened the meteorite case, giving everyone the rare opportunity to touch a real rock from space, a moment many won’t soon forget. As dusk approached, the group enjoyed classic s’mores around the fire and took part in a tour of the facility.

Once darkness fell, Professor Sibbernsen led a guided orientation of the night sky, pointing out bright constellations and the locations the celestial sights soon to come. Then it was time for the main event, exploring the universe through a half dozen telescopes set up in the Boller-Sivill Observatory and across the grounds.

Adding to the magic of the evening, local celebrity Jared Garcia of Nebraska Cornhusker Basketball fame, joined in on the fun. After learning how to use his brand new telescope, he generously shared views of the night sky with the scouts, making the experience even more special.

We are so grateful to Pack 461 for joining us and bringing such enthusiasm and curiosity. A heartfelt thank you to the parents and scout leaders for making this opportunity possible, and to the dedicated volunteers of Branched Oak Observatory who helped create such a memorable night for everyone.

Clear skies and we hope to see you all again soon!
