For our outdoorsy citizens. Back Country SOS is a must have

BACK COUNTRY SOS

Back County SOS is an app developed by Teton County Search and Rescue. This app is available in areas where text to 911 is available. If you have the app on your phone and get lost, hurt, stuck, or in any other emergency, you can utilize the app to notify emergency services without using a lot of your phone’s battery power. It also works where there is very little cellular service when a phone call may not go through. It will provide your location, the type of emergency, and the battery power you have remaining. You can then text back and forth with the dispatcher to get help without using all your remaining battery power. There is nothing to do other than install the app on your phone, no need to sign up for anything. The website lists the counties in Wyoming and other states where this is available. This App is a must-have for outdoor sportsmen in all seasons, so download it for iPhone and Android today!

You have to override the millennial default to ignore unknown callers when you’re lost. Kthanks 🤣

Stay safe out there!!

After two avalanche fatalities in MT and CO yesterday we want to send out a friendly reminder to please have the gear and know how to use it before you go out. Two lives could have possibly been saved if beacons would have been used. Both burials were found by probe lines and dog team. Both parties had shovel and probes, but no beacons. I have talked to someone recently that said they carry a inreach thinking that will replace a beacon, but unfortunately that is just not the case either.

For avalanche conditions please visit https://bridgertetonavalanchecenter.org. Most GPS apps like Gaia and OnX have avalanche layers that will tell you what the danger is and is clickable to go directly to the current forecast. Make a plan before going out and stick to that plan unless you are seeing activity that warrants taking it a little more easy. Always be aware of your surroundings, whumphing, cracking in front of your skis, and taking a moment to look at the layers after you dig a hole with your track. Be sure everyones gear is functioning at the trailhead. Do a quick race with the group to see how fast you all can get your gear out and assembled. Many times we have encountered someone that has had a broken probe or wrong shovel handle and this race helps figure that out instead of waiting until you truly need it. Be safe out there and lets all come back home safe to shred some pow another day.

Remember: just because your gps gives you an alternate route, doesn’t mean it’s a good life choice. Many scenic and back roads don’t have good cell service, aren’t frequently traveled by others (meaning less likely to be found in a timely manner), and are not maintained throughout the winter. Make sure you have a safety kit in your car and wait for the main roads to open back up. Stay safe!

Picture from google, though anyone who lives in Wyoming probably has at least 1 picture of a “but my gps said I could go this way” incident 😂🤷🏼‍♀️

Luckily the missing individual in this search was found safe. In a time of texting, Facebook messages, Snapchat and whatever other messaging platforms are out there, don’t forget your phones original purpose. Cell service is spotty at best in most remote Wyoming areas, but if you’re lost (or in an area/situation where your family & friends might be concerned that you’re lost), answer your phone. If it’s about your cars extended warranty, hang up. But if it’s searchers it could save your life.

A Colorado rescue team has some simple advice for lost hikers or anyone else who might find themselves stranded in the mountains -- answer your phone.
