How Do You Pray?
Jesus teaches us a pattern for prayer in Matthew 6:7–13, a passage many call The Lord's Prayer. But have you ever considered that Jesus may have intended it to be more than just words to repeat?
Before giving this model for prayer, Jesus gives an important instruction:
"And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words." (Matthew 6:7)
Prayer is simply a personal conversation with God. It is sharing the sincere desires of your heart with your Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Prayer was never meant to become empty words spoken out of routine or a religious ritual performed by habit. The Lord desires a relationship with us. He invites us to come before Him sincerely, speaking from our heart to His.
The prayer Jesus taught His disciples gives us a beautiful pattern for approaching our Heavenly Father—with worship, surrender, dependence, repentance, forgiveness, and trust in His protection and power.
The next time you pray, consider making it personal:
"My Father who lives in Heaven, Holy be Your name. Your Kingdom come, live in me. Your will be done in my life here on earth as it is in Heaven. Thank You for giving me this daily bread. Forgive me, Lord, and deliver me from my sins, and help me, Lord, to forgive those who have sinned against me. Protect and lead me not into temptation, but deliver me from the evil one. For Yours is the Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory forever. Amen."
I also want to encourage you that when you come to the end of your prayer, pause for a moment and remember Who you have been speaking to. Don't let your closing become a habit of simply repeating, "In Jesus' name, Amen." Instead, make your prayer personal from your heart. Consider praying with intentionality, recognizing the authority and relationship you have with Him:
"In Your name, Jesus, I pray. Amen."
