SAVED BY GRACE…
The story begins in the fourth chapter of 2 Samuel, when the dynasty of King Saul was coming to an end. Saul had a son named Jonathon, who had a five-year-old son named Mephibosheth. The city was under attack and little Mephibosheth’s nanny was carrying the boy as they were fleeing the city when she tripped and dropped him. As a result of the accident, his legs were crippled. If we fast forward to chapter 9, we again find Mephibosheth. David is now king and while reminiscing about his friendship with Jonathan, he asks if there is still part of the family he could show kindness to for Jonathan’s sake. David sent for Mephibosheth, and showed him incredible grace as he gave back all the land that had belonged to Mephibosheth’s grandfather, Saul. David also decides that Mephibosheth will live in the palace and dine at the royal table. Like Mephibosheth, we too have been taken from a place far from the King, pulled out of a life crippled by sin and shown grace by God. This re-positioning challenges us.
Accepting what we don’t deserve.
God’s grace is undeserved but freely given. Mephibosheth referred to himself as a “dead dog” – and his first reaction to David’s grace was acknowledging that he didn’t deserve it. None of us deserve God’s grace, but God freely extends it regardless of what we think we deserve.
Embracing your new position.
Mephibosheth was probably uncomfortable for some time after David showed him grace. God wants us to embrace our position with Him to expect His blessing, to be excited for what’s in store, and to see yourself as loved and blessed by God.
Eph 2:8
For it is by free grace (God's unmerited favor) that you are saved ( delivered from judgment and made partakers of Christ's salvation) through [your] faith. And this [salvation] is not of yourselves [of your own doing, it came not through your own striving], but it is the gift of God; AMP
