For decades hostas have been the default answer to what to plant under trees or along north-facing Ohio borders. That default is worth questioning. Not because hostas fail, but because a native alternative exists that does the same job and then some.

🌿New Series Alert!

❎Next Monday we’re launching a new series—our Top 10 Most Wanted list of invasive, non-native plant species negatively impacting Ohio’s private and public lands. 🌿You may even have some of these species bordering your own property.

❎Invasive plants often outcompete our native plant communities and provide little to no nutrition for wildlife especially when compared to Ohio’s native plant alternatives. 🌿Challenging to remove, the sooner they’re identified, the easier it is to remove them (although most species take several seasons to completely eradicate)! Learn more about Ohio’s invasive plants at naturalareas.ohiodnr.gov

🌿 Today is Endangered Species Day, a reminder that protecting native plants means protecting entire ecosystems.

There are more than 900 federally listed endangered plant species in the United States, many of which are threatened by habitat loss, invasive species, pollution, and climate change. From California jewelflower to Alabama canebrake pitcher-plant, native plants across the country play essential roles in supporting pollinators, wildlife, soil health, and biodiversity.

Wild Ones members help protect these ecosystems through habitat restoration, community science, education, and advocacy for native landscapes.

This graphic highlights one federally listed endangered (or threatened) native plant species from each state using data from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Environmental Conservation Online System (ECOS).

🌱 Every native plant added to the landscape helps support a healthier future for people, pollinators, and wildlife. Learn more at wildones.org 🌿
