Thank you for sharing Jersey Coast Emergency News. On behalf of the John Basilone Parade Committee, we thank you for sharing his story. We are on the shoulders of John, and all of “his boys” who have gone before us, and who will go on, to protect and serve and sacrifice for all of us. We encourage and welcome all to participate in the 2026 John Basilone Memorial Parade in Raritan Borough, NJ. September 20th. 1 pm.

Today, we honor Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone; a true American hero from New Jersey whose courage defined what it means to sacrifice for others.

Born in Raritan, NJ, Basilone became one of the most legendary United States Marines in history. During the brutal Battle of Guadalcanal in World War II, he stood his ground against overwhelming enemy forces, fighting through the night while many around him fell. With ammunition running low and enemy troops closing in, he continued defending his fellow Marines with unimaginable bravery. For his actions, he was awarded the Medal of Honor.

But John Basilone didn’t stop there.

After becoming a national hero, he could have remained safely home helping with war bond tours. Instead, he chose to go back into combat with his brothers. On February 19, 1945, during the invasion of Iwo Jima, Basilone once again charged into danger to save others. He was killed in action that day.

He gave everything for this country.

Memorial Day is not about barbecues or long weekends. It is about men like John Basilone. Men who laid down their lives so future generations could live free.

New Jersey will never forget your courage.
America will never forget your sacrifice.
