The Battle of Fort Sumter, fought from April 12–13, 1861, marked the official start of the American Civil War. Located in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina, the federal fort was bombarded by Confederate forces after Union troops refused to evacuate. After 34 hours of shelling, Major Robert Anderson surrendered. Though no soldiers died in the battle itself, Fort Sumter ignited a bloody four-year conflict that would define a nation’s future.
