Rushmore Rotary President Rene Cvitash Sorenson shared information about the club's strategic plan and our goals for the year during today's Rotary Day meeting. Good news ... we're right on track to meet our set goals. In fact, in the category of service projects, we've already completed 16 projects, just 4 shy of our goal of 20. Great job Rushmore Rotarians!

Rushmore Rotarians Jean Cline and John Cass also presented information about the upcoming renovations planned for Storybook Island. The $3.5 million project will significantly change the look and feel of the iconic park. But Storybook Island still needs help meeting its financial goal for the project. Rushmore Rotarian Janet Kahler has generously donated a $120,000 matching gift; and Jean and John, both Story Island board members, urged individual Rotarians to consider making a donation toward the project as well.

Storybook Island hosts approximately 200,000 visitors each summer and 20,000 to 30,000 during the holidays. Rushmore Rotary is proud to be a long-time sponsor of the park, helping to raise funds and volunteering many hours of service over the years.

Our first ever Rushmore Rotary Giving Circle event was a big success! Thanks to everyone's generosity, we raised $4,300 for small non-profit organizations serving the area. Of that total, $3,440 went to Reservation Outreach, a group serving the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Two other organizations, DaCoda Instruments and South Dakota Service Dogs, each received $430, along with the opportunity to spread the word on what they do. It was a great night for a great cause! Special thanks to Si Issler and Celtic Crossroads for providing the music.

Seth Tupper, editor-in-chief at South Dakota Searchlight, was our speaker this morning. His journalism career has paralleled industry trends: he went from working at a traditional newspaper with no website to now being part of a website with no newspaper. South Dakota Searchlight, which operates as a non-profit and focuses on state government, policy and politics, is one of about 10 news entities in the state that have sprung up in the void left by the decline of traditional newspapers.

Are you ready for the Rushmore Rotary Giving Circle? Not only will we help a deserving nonprofit in their mission, but we’ll have some great music by Celtic Crossroads to enjoy while we’re doing it.

Here are the deets: Rushmore Rotary Giving Circle on Tuesday, Oct. 6.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. at the Central States Fairgrounds Fine Arts Building, with the event running from 6 to 8 p.m. If you don't know what a Giving Circle is, here's the lowdown: Each participant contributes $100, which lets them vote for one of three local non-profit organizations: Reservation Outreach, South Dakota Service Dogs, and Da Coda Instruments. Representatives from each group will give a short presentation on what their organization does and how they would use the money.

At the end of the evening, the organization with the most votes will receive 80 percent of ALL money donated, with the other two organizations each receiving 10 percent.

There will be free live music during the event, which is open to the public. Food trucks and a cash bar will also be available.

Our speakers this morning were Lysann Zeller and Ria Hannon, who work with the Rapid City Sustainability Committee. We learned about Booms (one key point: do NOT throw lithium batteries in your garbage as they can start fires), Blooms (the city is planting more flowers to attract pollinators) and Beautiful Skies (light pollution wastes energy)! Also, did you know Badlands National Park has been named an International Dark Sky Park? Thanks Lysann and Ria, and thanks Roger Heacock for filling in!
