Our speaker this morning was District 5610 Gov. Mike Gibson, who is a member of the Rapid City noon Rotary club. Mike gave us an update on District officials and news, as well as a preview of the Rotary District Conference to be held Oct. 22-24 at Crazy Horse Memorial. His advice for Rushmore Rotary: "Just keep doing what you're doing and keep making a difference in this community."

This morning's meeting at the Central States Fair was one Rushmore Rotarians look forward to every year! Our guest speaker was Garrett Yerigan, a two-time PRCA Rodeo Announcer of the Year who announced his first professional rodeo at the age of 12.
CSF Director Ron Jeffries recognized Darla Crown, who was honored with a one-time Patriot of the Year Award at the Ag Appreciation Event Monday night.
Ron also honored his brother, Jim Jeffries, with a Paul Harris Fellow Award.

Rushmore Rotarians enjoyed a beautiful evening of volunteering last night for Feeding South Dakota. During these monthly volunteer opportunities, Rotarians and other volunteers in the community load groceries from Feeding SD into vehicles of those being served. Sometime it’s cold, sometimes it’s rainy and sometimes we get a gorgeous night like we did last night. No matter, it’s always a pleasure to serve our community.

Rushmore Rotarians heard from Tammy Barrows and Caitlin Ausmann-Winn from the Humane Society of the Black Hills at today’s meeting.

Tammy, executive director, shared that the nonprofit will open its new building for cats next week. Kitty City will allow the Humane Society to better care for the cats, which can become sick and stressed when housed near barking dogs.

The Humane Society is also focusing on helping pet owners by providing education and services that will allow them to keep their pets.

Thank you Tammy and Caitlin for all you do for animals in our community.

Ellie Palmer, Max Altman and Ella Schlieffarth presented during today's meeting about their experience attending the RYLA camp this summer.

RYLA, which stands for Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, helps young adults build leadership skills, confidence, and connections through Rotary-led training and hands-on experiences. Our club sponsored Ellie, Max and Ella to attend this year's camp, where they connected with other young leaders, attended learning sessions and had a lot of fun.

The three students also created a Little Free Library, which they plan to install in Rapid City.

Ellie and Ella are students at St. Thomas More High School and Max attends Central High School.

Teresa McDevitt, program coordinator for the Literacy Council of the Black Hills, was our speaker today. The organization helps anyone who wants to improve their English language skills in reading, writing and/or speaking. Last year they served 178 adult students from more than 30 countries, and volunteers are always needed! To learn more visit www.literacycouncilblackhills.org
