Seeking to put God's love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope.

A strong community begins with people who care.

When we show love and concern for one another, we create more than a place to live. We build connection, belonging, and hope.

Every helping hand and every act of kindness brings us closer to a community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

𝐓𝐈𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐓𝐎 𝐁𝐑𝐀𝐙𝐈𝐋: 𝐖𝐇𝐘 𝐁𝐑𝐀𝐙𝐈𝐋?

For millions of families in Brazil, finding a safe, decent place to call home is still a challenge.

According to Habitat for Humanity, Brazil faces a housing deficit of nearly 6 million homes, and millions of families live in inadequate housing. Access to safe water and sanitation is also a challenge for many communities.

Habitat for Humanity Brazil works alongside communities to improve housing conditions and expand access to water and sanitation.

At Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity, our work starts here in the Black Hills, but our mission reaches beyond our community. Through our tithe, we support Habitat’s work in Uganda, and we are excited to expand that support to Brazil.

For us, this is another way of putting God’s love into action and helping build homes, communities, and hope around the world.

From the Black Hills to Brazil, everyone deserves a decent place to live.

Our offices will be closed in observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day. We will reopen on Tuesday, October 13.

Wishing everyone a meaningful day of reflection and respect.

A home is more than a house.

This week, people around the world are reflecting on an important question: What does adequate housing mean, and why does it matter?

The 2026 World Habitat Day theme, “Adequate Housing for All,” reminds us that housing is more than a roof over our heads. It provides a foundation for dignity, security, stability, and opportunity.

At Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity, we believe everyone deserves the opportunity for a decent, affordable place to call home.

Because when a family has a safe and stable place to live, they have a stronger foundation for the future.

More than a house.
More than four walls.
A foundation for a better future.

The heart behind Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity was built on the belief that we are called to love and serve beyond the boundaries of our own communities.

Clarence Jordan, one of the spiritual fathers of Habitat for Humanity, captured this idea beautifully.

His words challenge us to look beyond what is familiar and to recognize the dignity and worth of every person.

Love has no boundaries. Neither does our mission.

What does “love in action” look like in your community?

What does home mean to you?
Today, we’re letting one of our partner families tell you in her own words what home means to her.
This is why we do what we do.
Because everyone deserves a place to call home.
Now we want to hear from you: What does home mean to you?

What exactly is Habitat tithe?

Through Habitat for Humanity’s tithe program, U.S. Habitat organizations are expected to contribute 10% of their unrestricted revenue each year to support Habitat’s global ministry.

Tithe is part of Habitat’s history and biblical roots as an ecumenical Christian ministry. For more than 45 years, it has created a cycle of generosity—connecting Habitat organizations and communities around the world.

The story began in 1979, when a Habitat leader in the Democratic Republic of the Congo collected money during a home dedication and asked that part of it be used to help start Habitat’s work in another country. That gift helped launch a Habitat organization in Guatemala—and the practice of tithe grew from there.

Today, tithe allows Habitat organizations to support housing work beyond their own communities.

So, when we tithe here in the Black Hills, we’re not just giving—we’re joining a global cycle of generosity and partnership.

Local work. Global impact.

Another group of volunteers rolled up their sleeves and gave their time to help build a world where everyone deserves a decent place to live.

On September 11, the Black Hills Energy team brought their energy, charisma and plenty of fun to Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity! As part of their annual partnership with the Helpline Center Black Hills, they chose Habitat for Humanity as their place to serve.

The team assembled drawers for a dresser that was donated to our ReStore. When I stopped by later to find it, it was already gone! A customer had seen it, loved it, and purchased it.

Talk about a win-win!

One day of service. One lasting impact.

Want to roll up your sleeves and make a difference? We’d love to have you join us!

We’re excited to share that we are expanding our tithe support to include Habitat’s work in Brazil.

Through our tithe, we also support Habitat’s work in Uganda, and we’re grateful for this opportunity to extend our global reach to Brazil.

For us, this is another way of putting God’s love into action—supporting Habitat communities beyond the Black Hills and helping create opportunities for families to have a safe, decent place to call home.

From the Black Hills to Brazil, we believe everyone deserves a decent place to live.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll share more about Habitat’s work in Brazil, the projects currently in the pipeline, and the role tithe plays in supporting this work.
