Career Learning Center of the Black Hills Empowering individuals to become self-sufficient through education, training and employment.

Guiding South Dakotans toward self-sufficiency through education that leads to employment. The Career Learning Center of the Black Hills can help enrollees gain National Career Readiness Certificates. Throughout the Black Hills adults enroll in GED, Adult Basic Education, and community education courses. The division also provides alternative school settings for high school students.

GED® student Cindy Roan Eagle, a member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, donates eagle feathers or plumes to our graduates who are tribal members.

Through a lifetime permit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's National Eagle Repository, Cindy is able to provide the feathers, which she prepares with care and prayer. For Cindy, it's about honoring graduates and helping them celebrate both their educational achievement and cultural identity.

"I'm very happy to do it, and I'm very proud to do it because these eagles are very sacred. And when they get it, their eyes just light up."

We are honored to be selected as a recipient of funding from the John T. Vucurevich Foundation.

Black Hills Special Services Cooperative has been awarded a generous grant over the next two years in support of Workforce Connections, a program dedicated to helping adults further their education and training while providing intensive mentorship to low-income residents in our community.

The Workforce Connections program contributes to the development of a skilled workforce in Rapid City.

Seven months ago, this journey began with an investment in opportunity. Thanks to support from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, we were able to launch a new daytime ESOL class, removing barriers and opening the door for more learners to participate.

This week, we celebrated the completion of that journey. Students, families, and community partners gathered to recognize months of hard work, growth, and perseverance.

Big growth can start with small victories.

Each week, our ESOL students add their accomplishments—big or small—to the “Victory Jar.” From practicing English in a new setting to reaching personal goals, every step forward matters.

A highlight of our ESOL class this semester was when a Japanese student from Hiroshima shared the history of the nuclear bomb that was dropped on her hometown.

She and her daughter then taught the class how to make paper cranes for our shared vision of peace. Some of the cranes we made as a class will travel back with them to Japan this summer, becoming part of the Peace Memorial there.
