Dan Mulally and Jerry Owens presented to a state 4H administrator meeting sponsored by Lincoln Co. 4H at Pennington Co. 4H building. We covered the nice fit of beekeeping for youth and 4H goals along with what it takes to become a beekeeper and much more. It was well received.

We learned with great sadness that our former secretary, Lise Baur, lost her battle with cancer. She was a dedicated Wannabee who never passed up an opportunity to promote beekeeping and the club. Rest in peace Lise (rhymes with bees), you will be missed.

I've been emergency feeding my bees both with (winter) sugar patties and granulated sugar on slit newspaper; on the top of the frames on the top deep box. The bees have been consuming fast. On top of that I have a quilt box filled with wood chips, no inner cover. The wood chips towards one side (left) are quite wet and there is even mold on the inside wall of the quilt box, see photo. I changed out most of the wood chips but this just shows how much moisture the bees generate in the winter. I have another hive with a similar setup but also an inner cover between the deep box and the quilt box. Those wood chips were dry but maybe that moisture is ending up in the hive.

On warm days I've also been feeding them sugar water and I see a lot of "tanker bees" gathering water so that might explain the moisture.

Sorry to say that Rob Reiner, SD state apiarist, is not feeling well and so we have rescheduled him for March. We will still have our regular meeting 11 Feb. Bill will talk about the longevity of honey.
