There is a new business in town that's… well… a little different. With a Grand Opening this Weekend!

It’s called The Wolf & Lion, and if you’re expecting a normal retail shop, you might want to reset those expectations.

The Wolf & Lion is a locally owned, fantasy-themed specialty shop. It's only a 240 square foot building, but you don't need much to create another world. The idea is part old apothecary, part enchanted library, part medieval market, and part curiosity shop. You’ll find handcrafted loose-leaf teas, books, tea wares, ritual goods, magical curiosities, and other fantastical treasures.

The grand opening is this Saturday, October 3rd, from noon to 6 p.m., at 1800 Elm Avenue. (just north of St Patrick along Elm Street) They’re kicking things off with the Wild & Wyrd Market, featuring local makers, artists, food vendors, performers, mystics, and some other wonderfully unusual small businesses.

Come for the tea. Stay for the magic.

And if you walk through that door and suddenly feel like you’ve wandered into a fantasy novel, that’s the kinda the point.

The South Dakota Department of Transportation is completely reconstructing the I-90 Exit 46 interchange, and when they’re finished, the area is going to look pretty darn different.
The existing interchange and bridge have reached the end of their service life, so instead of putting a Band-Aid on it, they’re essentially rebuilding the whole thing. And there’s a pretty big safety improvement coming with it. The new alignment will move Elk Creek Road over the railroad tracks, eliminating the existing at-grade railroad crossing.
The project also includes new eastbound and westbound I-90 ramps, a completely new bridge over I-90, portions of a new bridge over the railroad, drainage improvements, and reconstruction of parts of both Elk Creek Road and Sturgis Road. They’re also replacing pavement on I-90 between Exit 44 and mile marker 47.
As with all big construction projects, it's gonna take awhile. All 3 phases expected completion time in December, 2028.

If you've ever wished for a Raising Caines in Rapid City, one of my followers found a place that can fill that need.

It’s called Birdie’s Tenders & Burgers, and apparently Common Cents decided that selling gas, snacks, and questionable decisions at 11 p.m. wasn’t enough. It's located in the Common Cents convenience store off East Hwy 44.

Birdie’s is keeping the menu pretty simple: hand-breaded chicken tenders, crispy chicken sandwiches, smash burgers, wings, fresh salads, shakes, and more.

And this isn’t just a counter where you grab a chicken sandwich and get back in your car. Birdie’s is designed as an actual sit-down restaurant, a place to hang out and eat — not just another convenience-store food counter.

So if you’re looking for a new place for a burger, some chicken tenders, or just want to see whether a gas station can pull off a legit restaurant…Birdie’s is officially on the Rapid City food radar.

Shovels in the ground on a couple of cool projects on this week's "What is THAT Building?" Wednesday.

We recently had two major groundbreakings on the east side of town, and both are worth paying attention to.

First up is East Creek Village, a new attainable homeownership community from Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity and RCS Construction.

We're talking about 40 townhomes on about 4.25 acres. They're being built as homeownership opportunities for income-qualified buyers, with the goal of putting people into homes at a price point that actually makes sense for working families.

The second is Firre Station 9 and Homestead Park, near Homestead Street and Neel Street. It's a roughly $9.1 million project, and it will be the first time in Rapid City history that the police and fire departments share the same facility. The fire station will operate 24/7, and it's being designed as Rapid City's new hazardous materials response station.

Homestead Park will include green space, walking paths, playground equipment, shelters, restrooms, and recreational areas, creating some actual neighborhood amenities alongside all that new housing.

Construction is getting underway now, with completion and full operation expected around December of 2027.
